100. Top Gun NES
101. Altered Beast SMS *new*
102. Galaxy Force SMS *new*
103. Reggie Jackson Baseball SMS *new*

Altered Beast on the master system is pretty terrible, but dear Lord I still love it. This was my first SEGA at home game, and I didn't care how awful it was; I had Altered Beast at home, and that was all that mattered. Much more difficult than the Genesis version, much more uglier, and not a game I would ever recommend. Yet, I still find it playable.

Galaxy Force is a must have for any SMS owner. It's After Burner in space, and if that doesn't sell you, the graphics and music will. This is one of those games that makes the argument that the SMS > NES. I need to get on Galaxy Force II soon.

CHI NL became a world series champ in Reggie Jackson Baseball, which I would argue is the best 8-bit baseball game. The graphics are top notch, as is the gameplay. The controls make sense: Up is second base, right is first, and so on. You need to think on every play, every pitch, every throw, etc. Not a fan of the music? No worries. It's a perfect game to listen to music while playing. I would say it's the predecessor to Ken Griffey (the first one) on the snes, but has better controls. Superb sports game that's worth its price.

I've been working on beating Zillion II, which is ahh maze zing, but have fallen short of beating it so far. I also stink at the last level in Infinite.

Since it seems you have the same love for the game(s), did you find any weird issues with the "upgraded" port?

I know the games pretty well and everything seems perfect. I haven't gotten to 3 yet, but 1 and 2 were spot on and it felt exactly like playing the original games. People complained about audio issues (dialogue not syncing with animation or something), but... *shrug*. I didn't notice anything, but it could have been terribly out of sync and I wouldn't have really cared either.

In the first game there is this one area that suffers from slowdown if you back track to it. No idea why, and I can't remember if it was like this in the original game, but that's the only weird technical hiccup I ran into. (The fog area around where you first fight Griffon).

I can safely say I'll never be going back to the PS2 copies.

63. Duke Nukem 3D: Nuclear Winter (PC)(FPS)

"Damn, those alien bastards are gonna pay for shooting up my ride."

I love Duke Nukem 3D. It's a classic I have happily returned to on both PC and the Nintendo 64 multiple times in the nearly 20 years since its original release. But I admit that as time has gone by, I've gotten used to modern FPS controls, so dealing with arrow keys and limited mouselook has cramped things. At least, that was until the Atomic Edition came out, which has been further enhanced with the Megaton Edition release. Now I have modern controls and mousework, along with 4 full episodes and 3 expansion packs for over 50 levels of Duke goodness. I spent the last week as a very happy camper playing through each level again and trying some that I had never visited before. I've listed the three expansions as separate titles in my list because they were created by different developers and are technically unofficial.

Duke Nukem 3D, including the original 3 episodes as well as the 4th included with the Atomic Edition, The Hive. The first episode is my favorite of the game, fighting through city streets to shove my boot so far up alien scum's asses that their skulls serve as kneepads. I'm not a big fan of the second episode, as the space levels just don't hold the same charm, but Episode 3, Shrapnel City, takes me right back to the dirty streets of Hollywood, where I teach space bastards the meaning of the film title To Live and Die in LA. And then Episode 4 adds new enemies with 11 levels of mayhem and carnage while keeping all of the humor I love so much. My favorite level of Ep. 4 has to be "Pigsty," a police headquarters overrun by Pig Cops and under attack by the Terminator.

Duke Nukem 3D: Life's a Beach is the highlight of the expansions. It features redesigned weapons and enemy sprites for a tropical theme and includes new enemies: babes, seagulls, and inflatable pool toys. Levels are large, well-designed, and interesting to check out. And the final boss fight happens to be more challenging than anything except for maybe the Queen at the end of The Hive while still fighting the attitude of the game. I had a blast blazing through this one.

Duke Nukem 3D: Duke It Out in DC isn't quite up to snuff with Life's a Beach. Levels are large but vary in terms of their quality (the Smithsonian level is horrendous), and despite kicking ass and taking inhuman names in locations ranging from the Whitehouse to the J. Edgar Hoover building, I never really felt wowed by anything, except perhaps the second to last level where I had to fight my way through an infested nuclear submarine. That was pretty cool though tough since there was little room to dodge. That said, I did end up rescuing Bill Clinton and got a statue out of the deal. Not bad.

Duke Nukem 3D: Nuclear Winter is the worst of the three. Two levels are just redesigns of the first two levels of Episode 1, with added Christmas themes and some slight modifications. Enemy sprites have been changed a little to give them a Christmas theme, and new enemies have been added. Unfortunately those new enemies just felt like poorly-designed rehash of old enemies that don't fit the art style of the enemies they are ripping off. And each level is accompanied by a MIDI Christmas carol, which quickly grows repetitive and mind-numbing. As for the final boss, Santa Claws, he is the hardest in the game, because you're effectively fighting yourself with the same weapons but with a ridiculous amount of health. And for some reason, hitting him with a rocket only manages to knock him closer to you, so escape is not an option. I really despised this expansion and would suggest avoiding it in lieu of the quality additions the other ones provide.

Boy, I went back and forth on this one. I loved it for the first half of the game and was calling it one of my 2013 games of the year. Then when the second half of the game opened up I got so frustrated because the game's difficulty goes up so damn much and you have to grind random dungeons and side quests until you get strong enough (and find enough higher level AI partners) to even have a change against the game's second batch of bosses. Ugh, I hate forced grinding, and leveling up and getting new skills is such a slow process in this game. It's clear that the developers wanted to control the difficulty. It's very hard to quickly gain a bunch of levels and power your way through the game

So the game was pissing me off for a while and I did a ranty post in the thread going for this game, but I did finish it and I do still think it's a great game. It's an impressive fusion of genres. It's a beat 'em up, but it's also very, very much an rpg. I mean, every rpg trope is here. You can have a party, you have shops, you have equipment, side quests, treasure chests, NPCs, a town, dungeons, etc. It's probably the best example I have ever seen of a beat 'em up/rpg fusion as it scratches every itch for fans of both genres.

As a beat 'em up, everything is here. The combat system is great, lots of combos and a huge difference in play styles for each character. You take for granted something like throws as just a common thing in beat 'em ups, but in Dragon's Crown only one class can do them. Throughout the game, you'll see various familiar beat 'em up conventions. You scroll from left to right and kill stuff. You can ride animals like in Golden Axe. You will find lots of food items. You will have elevator style levels where you can send enemies plummeting to their doom. You'll pick up various weapons to attack people with. You've got four player co-op, and the game is even better than others because you can use AI controlled characters to accompany you if you can't get people to play with. And at the end of every stage, you'll face off against some super powerful boss

Some of the bosses are ridiculously hard and frustrating, but also impressive. They are not all just hack and slash away at big enemy while also fighting off minions. There are a lot of difference design elements at play in each boss battle. Plus, some of them are, quite simply put, epic. One dragon battle in particular leaves quite an impression

Overall, it's a great game - just gets a bit too tough in the second half IMO, but it's not unbeatable if you have the patience to do some grinding, or are willing to spend a fortune on repeat continues when you lose all your lives, or just get a group of players to help you. Shit gets real in the second half of the game.

The game looks gorgeous, and sounds amazing. It gives you bang for your buck too. Not only did I unlock a hard mode where my character and stuff carries over, but the game is even cool enough to give you a story reason for hard mode. It's also cool to know that my high level AI partners, gold, and rare items can be used by my other classes, who will have an edge despite starting the game at level 1. The game is stellar on Vita. There's some frame rate issues, but they never hurt the game much for me as they don't happen often enough to be annoying. Also, the game uses the touch screen in so many smart and seamless ways it feels like the Vita, not the PS3, was the system the game was designed for. I can't imagine playing it now without touch screen controls.

Maybe it was the emulation that was the problem, because I played it on an emulator. But I remember everything just running like molasses on it and it being pretty much unplayable because of it.

After Burner, Space Harrier, and Galaxy Force are basically all the same game presented in different fashions. They also all still hold up.

After Burner is a certified classic. People, or at least me, will be playing this for decades to come, and what gamer wouldn't want an After Burner sit down cabinet? It is gorgeuos, especially for an eight bitter.

The ending is so straight out of Top Gun that it is hilarious. Maver...I mean "Ace" even gives the thumbs up.

Space Harrier is easily the most difficult SMS game I've beaten this year. It's looooong and repetitive. It's still fun, but it a chore to beat. And what kind of ending do you get for completing said chore? An ending that is a story in text. A little disappointing as I remembered a great ending I must have dreamed when I was still a kid. Oh well. Anyway my score was astonishing. Something like eight or nine digits.

Now hopefully I'll be able ot beat Zillion II. That game has been driving me nuts.
