Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
Been messing around with some games to see if they'd stick. I probably should have stuck with Spyro the Dragon since it is short, but I kinda wanted a faster pace 3D platformer. Played Ape Escape but it was via emluation, and analog sticks weren't synched right, and I'm too lazy to fix it.
So, I'm thinkin MGS. I never beat it before, so it'd be nice so I can play MGS2 and 3 again with full context (been meaning to play that trilogy for ages). Only problem was I do not have a PSX version of MGS and I'd have to emulate it, and I always dreaded the PsychoMantis part, but I'm sure it's easy to get by if you're not lazy. Only problem is that the game might push me over the limit of missing the deadline, but yolooo.
Speaking of which, I beat Snatcher. My thoughts (no spoilers).
The first cut scene, I was a little worried because the voice acting between Gibson and his wife is not done well at all (I'm pretty sure that was added in later additions). After that it is all gravy though. I was blown away at the aesthetics and the voice acting in all parts after that was very good, way ahead of its time. It was really a marvel to look at. My first play through I appreciated the game more than to say I was having fun with it.
Second sitting, I really started to enjoy myself a lot (post Napoleans password). The atmosphere was starting to kick in, and the constant charm of hitting on people and going to strip clubs and stuff was really making it a blast of a game. It was a game that could be really funny, graphic, cartoony and mysterious all at once. It's written and directed very well, that I think it might be Kojimas best work (from a creators perspective, and I never played Policenauts).
The actual gameplay is pretty bad though, and I'm not just saying that because it's a visual novel. You have a bunch of options of what to pick "look, investigate etc)", and it feels like in order to advance all you have to do is just select all the options, the game doesn't actually give you real choice or consequence based on actions. Also, there are a few times when the game will clearly reference you to do something, in situations where the gamer should have been smart enough to know what to do (since you're a detective).
Like you start off with an ID card, and the first time where it is a good idea to actually use that item (since you're interviewing someone who doesn't trust you), it is kinda ruined by your partner telling you "hey, you should show them your ID card". This happens quite a few times, it isn't a big deal since I knew what I would have to do anyway, but the game didn't have to hold your hand to that degree.
The shooting parts I thought were good, even if they were simple. I liked coming up with the technique of just letting my crosshair reset to the center, and just going on raw reflex the second you see something on the screen to shoot it asap. The final shooting parts...jesus that was intense, only made it through with one hit (thank God, because having to do it over again would be a pain).
But yeah, when the game was over, it was a very satisfying feeling. Gibson is one of my favorite video game characters, he has so much personality and he's not 2D dimensional. Plus, I love how he's hitting on all these hot ass chicks. I felt every emotion when playing this game, even sorrow since some of the characters that get the raw end of the deal build a pretty decent relationship with you given their very very short time on screen.
It's the best game I've beaten in this challenge, as an overall score I'm thinking an 8/10 or 9/10, and I'd def say it's a game you have to see, even if you might not like it.

1. Aladdin (GEN)
2. Rockman (MD)
3. Rockman 2 (MD)
4. Rockman 3 (MD)
5. Dragon Quest (SFC)
6. Dragon Quest II (SFC)
7. Grandia (SS)
8. Resident Evil 2 (DC)
9. Dynamite Deka (SS)
10. Phantasy Star II (MD)
Knocked Phantasy Star II off the list. Just need to finish the final dungeon in DQ II (after some heavy grinding) and I should be ready to get to Grandia. I don't feel like I'm going to make it, at the moment, but 8 or 9/10 still wouldn't be too bad.

Awesome. The reasons in which you listed give me some great points to ponder before I make my decision.ZeroAX wrote:Nodsheinem wrote: If I beat the Duck Tales re-release, should that count?
Seriously, why do you say no? Because it is a remake? (I am not being snarky right now - serious question)
*EDIT: I read some reviews and noticed the boss fights are different and the levels have been extended... for those reasons I think I now agree with your "no" comment.

It was a joke mate
. A continuation of what is quickly becoming another racketboy meme, namely that Dave is this strict overlord who defines the rules of this game, and we all have no choice but to listen to what he considers retro and gems

Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
I would say the new HD Ducktales doesn't count just because theres been aa lot of changes. New sections, lots of unnecessary dialogue and new boss fights. One of the levels was totally redesigned too (the African Mines).
Was it you who was having a hard time with DuckTales? Because I read that the HD version is actually harder.

Well played sir... well played.ZeroAX wrote:It was a joke mate. A continuation of what is quickly becoming another racketboy meme, namely that Dave is this strict overlord who defines the rules of this game, and we all have no choice but to listen to what he considers retro and gems
I don't know why, but I forgot about Dave being the overlord of the "classic or not classic" classification of this thread.
While I do think the game is challenging (mainly jump timing) I have beat the game in the past, but have yet to play it this summer, so I don't think I posted about having a hard time.alienjesus wrote:I would say the new HD Ducktales doesn't count just because theres been aa lot of changes. After reading the reviews, I agree that this game is different and should not count because of the boss battles and longer levels.
