Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!

Post by alienjesus »

Every summer, for the past 3 years, members of the Racketboy forum have set themselves a goal to play some of the classic games they've been neglecting: The Summer Game Challenge.

It was started by old user Snickerd00dle back in 2010, and has run every summer since (with dsheinem taking over the reigns last year). Here's the challenge exactly as Snickerd00dle described:
what I thought I would do is pick ten games that I own and have never beat, that are regarded as classics by most people and are also games that I really wish I had played through, games everyone talks about that I never ended up finishing, and beat all ten of them by the end of the summer.
The definition of Summer he used was from the start June to the end of August, but you can feel free to define it however you wish - some prefer to start in the middle of May and play right through to mid September and the official end of Summertime.

So, which games are you ashamed to have never beaten? Or even worse, never started? Which classics do you always feel bad that you can't join in discussion of? Classics that have been on the shelf untouched for the past 5 years? Time to get them done!

Pick your list of 10, and get to it over this summer. Don't worry if you don't beat them all, or if you don't like them all, but at least try and give them all a go at long last!

Here's my personal list from the last 2 years:
2011:
1. Wonder Boy in Monster World (VC - Mega Drive)
2. Secret of Mana (VC - SNES)
3. Final Fantasy IX (PS1)
4. Blazing Lasers (TG16)
5. Banjo Kazooie (N64)
6. Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
7. Punch Out!! (NES)
8. Advance Wars 2 (GBA)
4. Metroid Prime 2 (GC) UNBEATEN
5. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii) UNBEATEN

2012:
1. Ducktales (NES)
2. Monster World IV (VC)
3. Star Wars Rogue Leader (N64)
4. Final Fantasy IV Advance (GBA)
5. Grim Fandango (PC)
6. Resident Evil 4 (GC)
7. Panzer Dragoon Orta (XBox)
8. Super Ghouls'n Ghosts (SNES)
9. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages & Oracle of Seasons (linked)
10. Metroid Prime 3 UNBEATEN
And without further ado, here is my list for this year:
1. Blaster Master - Wii VC (NES)
2. Cybernator - SNES
3. Super Aleste - SNES
4. Diddy Kong Racing - N64
5. Metroid Prime 3 - Wii
6. Loco Roco - PSP
7. Final Fantasy VII - PS1
8. Metal Gear Solid - PS1
9. Tomb Raider - PS1
10. Pulseman - Wii VC (MD)
11. Bubble Bobble - SMS

And yes, I did pull a Spinal Tap

P.S I know this thread is up really early, but I thought I'd give it time for people to prepare their lists, and for more people to notice and join in. This thread is at it's best when lots of people are playing old classics together for the first time, so try and match one of your games up with other people of you can!

He's right. Nobody should play Diddy Kong Racing.

I've started brainstorming a bit. Here's some ideas:

Beats of Rage
Eternal Champions
Grandia II
Hexen
Myst
Need For Speed
Nights Into Dreams
Panzer Dragoon
Tomb Raider

...nothing too concrete, yet.

Ideally, I want to play stuff that I'm really not familiar with. If anyone wants to make some suggestions, you can check out my collection here: http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/col ... ole=&type=

I've been playing Assault Suits VALKEN (Cybernator) lately. It's pretty tough. Good luck with it. I picked up its 'sequel' for PSP (Kisou Ryohei Gunhound EX).

Oh, cool, I see a game that I think you should spend more time with on there. I think it was called Blast Dope.

I'll be hanging with my baby girl all summer. Leaves little room for console gaming, but I can sneak in maybe an hour of a handheld game per day while she sleeps. Some titles I've been thinking about:

Breath of Fire III (PSP [PAL] - port of the PlayStation game)
Final Fantasy Legend (Game Boy)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC)
Magician Lord (Neo Geo X - port of the AES game, built-in title)
Psychic World (Game Gear)
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon (GBA - a remake of the first game)

Whether or not any of these are "classics" is debatable for sure.

For me, summer starts on June 12 - which is when the school year ends @ my workplace. I guess summer "ends" around Labor Day.

Hmm...a few thoughts:

7th Saga
Peace Keepers
Batman Returns
Donkey Kong Country
Doomsday Warriors
Pilotwings
Lagoon
Secret of Evermore
Dragon's Lair
Lester the Unlikely
Breath of Fire 2
Kid Klown in Crazy Chase
Super Adventure Island

Yeah, not classics(not even close in many cases), but I need to get through them all.

Because you asked, because others will, and because I want to compare notes with the handful of others who have beaten it.
