The PixelJunk Thread

Post by GSZX1337 »

Since the only PixelJunk thread I saw was for Sidescroller, I thought I'd start a thread for all the PixelJunk games.

I'll start by listing my opinions of the PixelJunk games I've played.

Racers - I'll be honest, this one kinda pissed me off. It's a competently made game and it can be fun, but I can't get used to the controls and the cars are just too tiny. In the latter half of the game, things speed up considerably and the screen is littered with tiny cars. It got to be a bit much. I was able to clear the last tier only because I got lucky.

Sidescroller - This was the first PixelJunk game that I played. Of course, I was interested in it because it was a hori shmup. Sidescroller plays a bit differently than other shmups. It's very compartmentalized with each stage having its own score. I also appreciated how you start from scratch at the beginning of each stage. It helped me with my fear of "Gradius-syndrome". I didn't really look hard for the treasures, but it was always a pleasant surprise when I found one.

Shooter - This game was an absolute blast. I loved shooting the monsters, saving the survivors, digging through rock, and looking for diamonds. The levels are lengthy, the boss fights are engaging, and the powers added later keep the game from losing steam near the end. I can't really think of anything really wrong with this game and plan on getting the sequel.

Eden - I'm in the middle of the game with 25/50 Spectra but so far I'm really liking it. Swinging around, collecting pollen, jumping from branch to branch - fun stuff. The levels are ginormous and can take a considerable amount of time to fully complete. Because of this, I've dumped more than a few hours into only half of the game. If Eden can keep its momentum, this'll be a real gem.

What do you guys think of these games? If you've played the games I haven't gotten to, tell me how they are. Is anyone here on the PixelJunk fence?

Eden is absolutely awesome and one of my favorite PSN games. Everything in that game just flows perfectly, it's great. Very unique and just plain fun, I would recommend it to pretty much anyone.

Shooter was very cool, but it didn't captivate me like Eden did. I enjoyed it though and will probably revisit it. The game had the same artistic flair going on that Eden did, and just in general played very well. But it didn't quite have that feeling of originality and freshness that made Eden great. The design kind of reminded me of old school DOS games for some reason though, like I was playing Riptide while saving lemmings.

Those are the only two I played. I'm not into racing games really, so I don't think I'll ever play Racer. Sidescroller I hadn't even heard of, but if it's a hori shooter that sounds interesting and I'll probably check it out eventually. I see they have a tower defense game and some other new ones too, maybe I'll get on them.

Really hope they release some kind of physical compilation, that would be awesome.

Eden's the only one I like a lot. As mentioned, the gameplay just flows so smoothly. I've made it quite far in it, and if I'm in the right mood I can play it for hours.

I got a bit further in Eden. I finally died, seven gardens in. Damn wind kept me from grabbing the fifth Spectra before the meter running down. Still having fun, though.

The last PixelJunk game I have on my PS3 is PixelJunk Monsters. I'm thinking about skipping this one. I'm not into Tower Defense games. I haven't even bothered to play Plants vs. Zombies. My experience with the genre mostly stems from the many Flash games I've played around 2008 or so. I got burned out on those pretty quickly. Does anyone think Monsters would be different enough to hold my interest?
