Everything basically spiked up hard in 2012. Nothing you can do about it.

Eventually prices will go down (i hope), in the meantime buy the non-nintendo stuff witch is far more cheaper.

Or you could also go for Japanese Nintendo stuff, which has been fairly cheap lately. I've pretty much stopped looking for American SNES games because of how ridiculous the market's been, so now I go for the Super Famicom equivalents whenever I can.

Same games like the megaman series, castlevania, hagene, aero fighters ect are completely playable in japanese (sometimes even the same exact rom) and a tiny fraction of the price of snes versions. Oh castlevania dracula x is actually better on the super famicom because it is uncensored, it actually has red blood, the snes version has green or white i believe like metal slug.

This really sucks because I recently got in retro gaming and It's a pain in the ass to find reasonable prices.

The trick is to focus on and collect for platforms that are relatively inexpensive. Most of the Nintendo stuff commands a premium. However, Genesis would be a good alternative to SNES. It helps to be creative about it as well, instead of going for US Saturn releases go for the Japanese versions instead which are abundant, cheap(er), and CIB. The same goes for SNES, go for the Famicom version instead. Hopefully, the Retron5 will make all of this even easier.

You could also pursue games that will become retro such as the Wii/PSP, which have an abundant used supply at Gamestop for cheap (and still CIB).

Fairly cheap consoles to collect for:

Genesis
Xbox
Gameboy
PSP
Wii

Prices for retro games generally have gone up..which is good if you already have a decent collection and bad if you plan to start collecting. I remember a few years ago a SNES was practically worthless, now I see posts for like 60-70 bucks for the system alone..guess things change quickly lol.

I would add PS2 to that list.

I started by collecting for NES and within 3 weeks learned that with my teenager budget was nearly impossible. I sold off my NES collection and bought back a GBA SP which is a lot more economical to collect/game for. I'm also focusing on my PSP and PS2 collections because they are really cheap to buy CIB and in a few years it will "officially" turn retro the prices will go skyward. So now is the time to buy buy buy.
