To paraphrase Ashens. It showed up on Kickstarter billing itself as a cheap microconsole that could run Android stuff and people were like "MONEYMONEYMONEY". Then when it came out, people got a cheap microconsole that ran Android stuff and asked "What's this crappy cheap microconsole that runs Android stuff?". It works great for emulators and will probably get a few interesting games. At the low entrance price it's not terrible especially if you want it for streaming media and emulators. If you wanted a 360 competitor for a third of the price you will be extremely disappointed. If you do your research, and limit your expectations and understand what the thing is setting out to do it's a reasonable device. The software side is by far the weakest part and that will improve with time. It runs NovaLauncher, XBMC, Plex, and all the emulators I want like a champ though. I recently bought a wireless touchpad/keyboard for it and that's what I use for it and it's great.

It'd have similar capabilities, sure.

The main thing with it is that it's designed to be used like a console. The front end and games offered through it are intended to be used on a TV, with a controller. The device itself is cheap enough that using it for a dedicated purpose (hacked or not) is feasible.

that is true , but the hassle is in having an extra device on the TV setup. I wonder if it could replace my WDTV . I do not want jitters or hiccups running 1080p .

I think the Ouya will be one of those devices that were designed for one thing but are going to be used for another. With an open platform, I think Ouya will be used more for stuff like kiosks or a cheap computer to browse the net. I wonder if it is as capable as an S4 or not

It's not even close. If I recall, the Ouya hardware is something like 40% the performance of the S4, going by the Futuremark benchmark. It does well for a Tegra 3 device, but that's older tech now (though still probably a lot better than what's in the WDTV).

But, that's why they've expressed the intent to update the platform annually or so. It'd probably be feasible to sell the core console for about what a full priced game goes for on the big name platforms.

I ended up deciding on a Raspberry Pi since it's so cheap and I like messing with Linux. I have a leftover vehicle backup camera screen from my Nomad modding adventures, and links to buy mini switches from a member's GBA modding post. I'm going to turn it into a mini MAME cab once I've finished pushing it to it's limits. It's going to be a lot of fun.

Can you really turn the Ouya into a full MAME cabinet? Can I plug arcade sticks to it and connect to a tv and play Arcade games?

that would be enough reason to pay the $100

There are a few releases of MAME for Android so sideloading should work. Getting decent arcade sticks working on the Ouya would probably require some controller modding. I don't see turning an Ouya into a MAME box being really difficult, but you can do it much easier with an old PC or laptop for cheaper...

It's not hard to find a refurb business PC for under $100. But, there's still a significant difference in size, power consumption, and so on that may make an Ouya or similar more attractive.
