It's similar to the Dragon Quest style of gameplay - it's "linear" only if you actually know where you're supposed to go. Otherwise, there's a lot of roamin' around.

Made it past the Red and Yellow Dams, now only the Blue and Green remain.

Not sure if anybody else is still playing along, but I have finished all the Dams.

I finished but I'm still reading everything posted here.

I still check in now and then. Maybe when more people finish we could have a better discussion.

I'm playing Phantasy Star IV now - interesting to see how it relates to part II and the other Phantasy Star games. (I had said that part IV ignores part III but I was wrong - I found a reference).
And I mentioned it in another thread but I'll say it again here - there are some spin-offs to PSII called the Phantasy Star II Text Adventures. They were released over the Sega Meganet in Japan only. Translation patches exist for all eight of them. I previously thought there was no physical release, but they were ported to the Game no Kanzume compilations for the Mega CD. I'll have to check them out someday...

Shame Sega never released the Phantasy Star Generations remakes over here.

No kidding! The character designs are off the chain.

Since I don't own a Genesis, I was looking to see what platforms Phantasy Star IV was available on. I saw that II, III, and IV are available on steam, and are correctly categorized as platform games. hmmm.
