I should mention that Phantasy Star II also has official, English language releases on PS2, PSP, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, PC, Wii and Dreamcast. Easy to get even without emulation.

I really hope it isnt DW 1. Too grindy for my tastes, too dated. I wouldnt mind diving into DW3.

I have tried DW 1 in the past and it was tough, though I know I should beat it as it started the series and one of the first JRPGs.

DWIII is great...really, really great. It is easily my favorite 8-bit RPG, and you should spend some time with the GBC port regardless of whether we pick it. I chose DWI because (like you) I have never been able to get into it, but (again, like you) I know that I should play through it at some point.

Regardless, there are a lot of great JRPGs on this list...but (fortunately? unfortunately?) I have played through most of them already. :?

Yeah, I think we will have to start with the more accessible and classics to establish a baseline then dive into some of the more obscure titles.

I wanted to vote for Suikoden SO badly, but I've played it a bagillion times by this point. So Phantasy Star II and Dragon Quest win my votes, even though I want to play through the Saturn version of Suikoden, and replay the series with the Japanese versions-- Y'know what. Screw it. I'm changing DQ to Suikoden.

Also, there's a distinct lack of 6th gen RPGs in these nominees. Have they been deemed generally too long for this endeavor? I'm a little shocked by no Breath of Fire representation, as well.
