Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Evanescence had huge mainstream popularity during late 90s and early 2000s and must be the metal bands that have had the most mainstream success in USA during the last 15 years or so. Disturbed, POD and Drowning Pool (+Korn) were also really big and mainstream at one point.

Slipknt and Evanescence are very popular, but they aren't "nu-metal". I don't hear any hip-hop influence in their stuff.

It's not as overbearing when compared to metal bands at the time, but it's certainly in Slipknot's earlier stuff along with melodic rap and D&B. I think they realized it was all a huge wave of trendy bullshit and tried to separate themselves from that image.

On a metal forum I used to post on, whenever a newbie would try to start a thread about a nu metal band the mods would post a giant pic of Slipknot that contained the text KNOT METAL and lock the thread. Always good for a lol.

Just like Disturbed who cite themselves as reggae-influenced metal, and mention that they don't like being lumped in with Nu-Metal bands due to the time of their emergence.

Notice most of the Nu-Metal bands have rapping of some sort in most of their stuff. Slipknot doesn't do that.

Like I said before, people like to lump in most of the radio-friendly late 90s bands into the Nu-Metal catagory when that's a complete over-generalization of the style.
