Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Evanescence had huge mainstream popularity during late 90s and early 2000s and must be the metal bands that have had the most mainstream success in USA during the last 15 years or so. Disturbed, POD and Drowning Pool (+Korn) were also really big and mainstream at one point.
Slipknt and Evanescence are very popular, but they aren't "nu-metal". I don't hear any hip-hop influence in their stuff.

It's not as overbearing when compared to metal bands at the time, but it's certainly in Slipknot's earlier stuff along with melodic rap and D&B. I think they realized it was all a huge wave of trendy bullshit and tried to separate themselves from that image.

On a metal forum I used to post on, whenever a newbie would try to start a thread about a nu metal band the mods would post a giant pic of Slipknot that contained the text KNOT METAL and lock the thread. Always good for a lol.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_%2 ... e_album%29
Genre: Nu metal,[1][2][3] alternative metal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal
Characteristics
Nu metal is also sometimes noted for participation of women in the genre in contrast to other metal genres,[26] including bands such as Coal Chamber,[27] Evanescence,[28]

Decline in popularity
Evanescence's debut album Fallen, was also released on March, 2003. Many critics noted the nu metal sound of the album,[67][68] whose Grammy Award-winning lead single "Bring Me to Life"[69][70] was compared favorably to Linkin Park's style. By the end of 2003, Linkin Park's Meteora and Evanescence's Fallen ranked third and fourth respectively in the best-selling albums of 2003,[71]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slipknot_%28band%29
Genres: Heavy metal, nu metal, alternative metal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nu_metal
Early development
The origins of the term are often attributed to the work of producer Ross Robinson, sometimes called "The Godfather of Nu Metal".[12] Many of the first nu metal bands came from California,[38] like Korn, which pioneered the nu metal sound with the release of their demo album in 1993,[39] and Deftones. Other influential bands are Staind from Massachusetts, Limp Bizkit from Florida,[11] and Slipknot from Iowa.

Mainstream popularity
That same year, Slipknot released their second album Iowa which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard 200,[61] going on to sell over a million copies In the United States,[62] critic John Mulvey proclaimed the album as the "absolute triumph of nu metal".[63]

One of the two example sound clips in that article is a Slipknot song, and they're also pictured in the article.

One of the two example sound clips in that article is a Slipknot song, and they're also pictured in the article.
And also from Wikipedia:

"Slipknot draw influence from an array of styles and bands, most notably including hard rock and heavy metal bands such as Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Helmet, Slayer, Fear Factory, Godflesh, Skinny Puppy, Neurosis, Judas Priest, Metallica, White Zombie, Led Zeppelin and Beastie Boys.[10][79][80][81] Slipknot are seen as pioneers of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal and have been compared to groups such as Pantera, Machine Head, Hatebreed, Life of Agony, and Prong.[82] They are also considered a nu metal band. However, band members prefer to distance themselves musically from bands such as Korn and Limp Bizkit. Slipknot describe their sound as simply "metal metal" and equate their link to nu metal solely as a coincidence in their time of emergence"

Just like Disturbed who cite themselves as reggae-influenced metal, and mention that they don't like being lumped in with Nu-Metal bands due to the time of their emergence.

Notice most of the Nu-Metal bands have rapping of some sort in most of their stuff. Slipknot doesn't do that.

Like I said before, people like to lump in most of the radio-friendly late 90s bands into the Nu-Metal catagory when that's a complete over-generalization of the style.
