Yeah, I consider most early grind to be closer to crust and anarcho-punk than anything else. Grind started to get much more "heavy" and "metallic" with deathgrind and whatnot - I'd say by the late 80s.

Well you did have Repulsion. I would mention Terrorizer as well, but I guess 1987 still counts as "late 80s"BoneSnapDeez wrote:Yeah, I consider most early grind to be closer to crust and anarcho-punk than anything else. No, you said metal has always been underground. With the "always" italicized and all, which is why I brought this all up.AppleQueso wrote:Did you think I was saying "all metal in the 80s was underground" or something? Because I didn't say that. I said a lot of the most exciting stuff was underground.

Overall, as a genre, it's underground. Like many other genres.
Industrial music isn't "mainstream" because everyone listens to Nine Inch Nails. Exceptions to a rule don't disprove the rule entirely.

Except for the entire decade of the 80s. Regardless of why or who was mainstream exactly, it was still mainstream.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Overall, as a genre, it's underground. Like many other genres.
And judging from this discussion, I think I may be the only hair metal fan here.

You know, "The more successful periods (in terms of mainstream popularity)", as in, for example, the fucking 80s."Not in the best state?" Based on what metric? Metal's always been underground, that's where everything exciting has always happened. The more successful periods (in terms of mainstream popularity) have basically been a result of the underground scene just bubbling over so to speak.
You keep saying that I've said things I didn't actually say.

You did say it though, lol, are you freaking blind or what? You even quoted it again, yourself. And how is the 80s a result of the underground bubbling over? It was a natural progression of rock into hair metal up to that point. Hair Metal ruled the world for the entire 80s and did it without the help of the underground.AppleQueso wrote:BurningDoom wrote:Except for the entire decade of the 80s. You are confusing genres again. Hair metal is about as metal as Michael Jackson The Experience and Party Babyz are video games.BurningDoom wrote:Hair Metal ruled the world for the entire 80s and did it without the help of the underground.

No it's metal, without a doubt. It's your own limited view of metal that's getting in the way.brunoafh wrote:You are confusing genres again. Metal elitism is pathetic.
