1. Chrono Trigger (SNES) Beaten
2. Shining Force (GEN)
3. Dark Souls (360) Beaten
4. Halo 4 Beaten
5. Silent Hill 2 (PS2) Beaten
6. Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) Beaten
7. Monster Rancher 2
8. Pokemon Yellow (GB)
9. Mega Man X2 (SNES) Beaten
10. Final Fantasy 3 (SNES) Playing
Just finished up Chrono Trigger and, oh my - to this day, what an amazing RPG. Took about twenty hours and was worth every minute. There are so many connections throughout the story, especially the relationships with the characters, and it isn't much wonder the game has such an incredibly strong following. The difficulty is perfect later on in the game too (though quite easy at the beginning) and all the searching around for clues is just enough to keep you looking without becoming frustrated. Moving from one masterpiece to the next, Final Fantasy 3 is next on the list!

Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
So I finally got stuck into a little more Tomb Raider tonight. I'm still on the fence about this one to be honest.
I love the concept, I love the gameplay when it works and I love the atmosphere and setting of the game. The main issues are the lack of camera controls making fighting enemies frustrating, the awkward and sometimes unresponsive movement and platforming controls and the games' textures.
That last one might need explaining a little, but basically, even though I'm only 1/5th through the game, I've had to look up where to go more than once, and more often than not, it was right in front of me the whole time. The problem is that the game uses the same low res textures for basically all of it's surfaces in a stage, making it very difficult to see the rock sticking out of the wall you need to jump to unless you see it from the right angle. This is problematic as the levels have been quite open and take a lot of exploration, and it's all too easy to walk past what looks like a flat wall several times before seeing anything.
The game could do with a little more music too. I get what they were going for with the mostly silent levels with the odd brief bit of music when you discover a cool new historic place or artifact, but it gets a bit dull sometimes.
That said, I am having fun with the game in short bursts.
Plus, so that was cool.

Tomb Raider is very dated, but modern games could still learn a few things from its design...alienjesus wrote:That said, I am having fun with the game in short bursts.

The sequel is in all respects a better game...although it drags a bit at times. In any event, let us know your thoughts when you finish up. (I am also curious to hear your thoughts on the article, given what you recently accomplished in the game...)

Classics
1. Ducktales (NES)
2. QuackShot (Gen)
3. Adventures of Batman and Robin (SNES)
4. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (PC) Finished 6/29
5. Wonder Boy in Monster World (Gen)
6. Star Wars: KOTOR (XBOX) In Process 20hrs
7. Streets of Rage (Gen) Finished 6/16
8. Streets of Rage 2(Gen)
9. God of War (PS3 HD) In Process 8hrs
Not Classics that I want to beat before summer ends
10. Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions (PS3)
I haven't updated this in a while, but I have been chugging through God of War. I'm enjoying the game, but it has got to the point where it is repetitive enough that I'm playing for the sheer desire to "want to finish". I finished Pandora's Rings and the first half of the Architects Obstacle Course... so I am close to finishing it.
After God of War I think I'll play Streets of Rage 2, since I should beat that in one or two tries. After SoR2, playing Monster World and Spider-Man would be a good one-two combination.

Th article was interesting, although the impact he described was a bit lost on me as I already knew that it was going to happen (although not necessarily right then).prfsnl_gmr wrote:Tomb Raider is very dated, but modern games could still learn a few things from its design...alienjesus wrote:That said, I am having fun with the game in short bursts.

Played Tomb Raider back in the PS1 days. Didn't care for it. I recall roaming around aimlessly, but that's about it. It felt like a tech demo.

The oddest thing about Tomb Raider is how Lara Croft basically became the mainstream face of gaming for the bulk of that entire generation.

I think she was the official Sony mascot for a while, along with Crash Bandicoot.AppleQueso wrote:The oddest thing about Tomb Raider is how Lara Croft basically became the mainstream face of gaming for the bulk of that entire generation.

the face isn't the body part people associate with Lara CroftAppleQueso wrote:The oddest thing about Tomb Raider is how Lara Croft basically became the mainstream face of gaming for the bulk of that entire generation.
