I really think the view that Nintendo games are for kids comes from kids themselves. Teenagers want to prove that they are mature and becoming adults so they distance themselves from certain things. I refuse to believe there are actual adults out there that think Nintendo games are 'kiddie' and overly violent and ridiculous games are 'mature.' There is nothing even slightly mature about most games that receive that rating, imo. When I see someone call Nintendo kiddie the first thing I think is 'angsty teenager.' Shame on me for pigeonholing people I guess. *Not that there is anything wrong with teenagers. I was one once myself! I also do not mean that all teenaged people are like this or the same.

I'm at the point with AAA 'serious' games where I don't even give them a shot anymore. The last one I purchased (and enjoyed) was RDR I believe. I think I'll be fine with Nintendo, my PC and my Android tablet/phone for quite a while. I am considering finally picking up a PS3 whenever they drop to $99 or so though. Not sure since it is my understanding that multiplats where better on the 360 so I might just get one of those again. OT tangent, sorry.

My mistake then. I got those numbers from an article I read. I should have checked first.

I'm not much concerned anyway as long as there are games I want to play on it. I don't mind if the Wii U is a niche console.

Metroid and Zelda are AAA 'serious' games, does that mean you don't play those anymore either :o?

Of course console sales numbers matter. Primarily they matter because those numbers are useful to help figure out when (if ever) it will look like the Wii U is worth the price of admission/investment for someone.

Thus far, for me, there aren't enough Nintendo-developed exclusives for the system to make it worth my purchase. For some people one Mario or Zelda game bolstered by middling ports of PS3/360 games is enough. I'm not in that camp. (By contrast, there are already more/enough announced games of interest to me for the PS4 and Xbox One. Plenty of Wii U users aren't in that camp.) Additionally, I haven't seen interesting third party stuff announced at all since the console's launch, which, coupled with historically poor sales, leads me to think the console is likely in decline.

If I am going to spend $300+ on a console and buy new games for it, I want to see that it has a healthy amount of sales so that I will feel it is worth jumping in at full price. Otherwise I'll wait until the end of its life, grab the console when it hits $100ish, and buy most of the library that I'd care about for less than the price of the console itself right now. Healthier sales, which would lead to more games of greater variety, would almost certainly change my mind.

First of all I want to point out that I am not biased, and if I was I would be more on the Nintendo side . In my lifetime I owned 1 Microsoft console(360) , 1 PSX , and 4 Nintendos (1 GB,1 SNES, 1 Wii/gamcube) .The reason I am talking about Nintendo here is that because I would like them to stay in the market, and I would like to see a new Nintendo that fits the current videogaming era we live in. Old tactics won't survive forever .

That's all your opinions and personal tastes in games.
Yes it is, but I do not believe I am the only one out there. I believe huge percentage of gamers share this opinion.

RCBH928 wrote:Yes, the games are the redeeming factor of this console, but that factor is getting weaker and weaker.
Again, that's just your opinion.
Again yes, but I am basing it on gamers' current trends. I remember a time when people would buy the SNES or 64 just to get Super Mario Bros or Mario 64 . While they might still exist, I am not sure how many out there bought the Wii just for Super Mario Galaxy . My point is , it is still redeeming customers but its not as powerful as it used to be. The only game that is just as powerful is Mario Kart. We are talking about Nintendo francises here only.

I'd like to think they know what they're doing up in the high offices of Nintendo. If the numbers don't make sense, I don't think they'd be making game after game of the same series.
Numbers are still making sense and they are making money, but my point is how long in the future will the numbers make sense ? Nintendo will not die, but if they want to be back in the game they should at least push for new IPs or open some kind of a different approach towards gaming like Sony did with the PSX (3D, CD based, mature games) and Microsoft (Shooters to consoles, Online multiplayer).

It is not only me who does not want to see more of the Nintendo franchise. You can browse the whole internet and will find the same complaints , something you wouldn't hear much of in '96 . When Mario and Zelda were the best games in the videogame market. People around me forgot the Nintendo brand. They used to call videogames Nintendo now people call it Playstation .

My whole point is that Nintendo should push for new IPs and stop milking the cow, because in my own opinion is that the udder is getting dryer and dryer .

@Wclem

I would really love to hear what are those 50 games on the Wii that are better games than what is available on the ps3/360 and are not Nintendo franchises and not ports of other consoles or last generation Gamecube . I do that the batch that was released on the Wii's last days like Last Story and Pandora is more of what we were looking for all along on the Wii not We Ski, Big Beach Sports, and Carnival Games.

@CavZee

I am sorry, but the WIi is a KIDDY console. Kiddy does not mean cartoonish graphics . Both the ps3/360 offer great games that are cartoonish and suitable for youngsters and adults:
Ni no Kuni , Fat Princess, Castle Crashers , Little Big Planet, ModNation racers , Street Fighter 4, Rayman Origins, Sonic all Star Racing , Eternal Sonata ... the list goes on.

The reason they call Wii a kiddy console because it has games like Cooking MaMa , Carnival games, and others.

I wouldn't call Nintedo a kiddy console since the 64. While psx had mature titles, the 64 selection was something that Nintendo used to do well, games that were fit for both adults and youngsters . All the top 64 games were played by adults including:
-The Wrestling games, Zelda , Mario, GoldenEye, Mario Kart .

GC was more mature with: Eternal Darkness, Metroid 3D, RE4 , Killer 7, .. you do get the idea.

While some mature games exist on the Wii, people are buying it for the Kiddy games. I do not think any one bought a Wii for Manhunt 2 or Splinter Cell double agent.

I am also find it ridiculous that Nintendo is releasing something like Bayonetta and Zombi U for the same consumers they are targeting with Nintendo land, Wii Fit U , and Scribblenauts unlimited.

Probably because not many people used the internet in 1996.

The best 50 Wii games aren't better than the 50 best 360/PS3 games, but there are still a lot of good Wii games. They have a nice collection of 3rd party exclusives.

Actually, from my digging around in old usenet postings from around then, there was PLENTY of Nintendo bashing. :P

So you're saying that low sales will mean less third party support, which in turn affects your decision whether the console is worth the price tag? That's fair enough, I guess, if you truly could only afford one console and you weren't already interested in one or the other. But you're clearly gonna buy a PS4/Xbone anyway. I'm clearly gonna buy a Wii U. If the both of us could only truly afford to get one and definitely not the other, our minds are already made up.

But my point was... The damn console hasn't even been out a year yet, numbers at this point don't mean anything. We also have to consider the economy, and yes, the fact that the selection of games was/is pretty limited. If the numbers seem kinda low right now, well, that's probably 99% of the reason. You can't fix the economy, and sales will pick up since a lot of very strong titles are being released this holiday season (I'm hoping for a nice holiday bundle myself, and that hopefully I can afford one by then). But I find it pointless to look at the number of U consoles sold at this point and try and pass any kind of judgement on it. That's jumping the gun a little.

Nintendo isn't a dumb lab rat that keeps pushing the Mario button because the money comes out, I'm sure they'll evolve to meet demands as the world changes around them. They are a business after all. But for the time being, there's fan demand for more of the same old first party games, whether some people like it or not. Just because people are whining about it doesn't mean Nintendo should stop "milking the cow" for the people that want more milk.
RCBH928 wrote:It is not only me who does not want to see more of the Nintendo franchise. You can browse the whole internet and will find the same complaints
Of course, that's what I said I'm getting annoyed at, that was my whole point!
RCBH928 wrote:My whole point is that Nintendo should push for new IPs
Wasn't it recently revealed that they are? There was a link posted to an IGN article some where on this forum, a translated interview with Miyamoto where he almost flat out says Nintendo is working on a new game series of some kind but didn't want to go into any kind of details.

FWIW, it is an opinion shared by critics. Meatcritic has the top 50 PS3 games with an average of 92.1 and a median of 92, the top 50 360 games with an average of 92.2 and a median of 92 and the top 50 Wii games with an average of 87.9 and a median of 87.

There's lots of companies that have come out and talked about not supporting the Wii or porting games to it BECAUSE of the numbers. It DOES make sense to talk about them now, because of the fact that they are so bad (as I listed in a previous post where I discussed comparative performance by quarter and in the first year). The economy - including consumer spending - has long been on a rebound, so I think that it is a non-factor or a small factor: it certainly isn't 99% of the reason. Poor marketing/naming and low appeal to the majority of money-spending gamers are the main reasons for its decline.
