What, that's his official name? I started the game, thought, "What am I supposed to call him? Oh well. I'll just name him something dumb like Rolf."

Grinded a bunch. Just entered the first dungeon, Shure. That's enough for this evening.

Yeah, the battle system is a little strange. It seems like you hit fight and a bunch of random stuff happens. Does anybody know if character position does anything in this game? Is it similar to ordering your party in old western RPGs? It doesn't seem like distance is a factor though.

I don't believe party order matters, though I order my weaker members at the end of the list just in case. The way the battle system works is you set an action for each member, then hit fight. This will cause you to autofight using those preselected actions until you hit B to cancel and get another chance to select. And your characters start off with some default actions (which can be changed in the menu). Some members might auto attack, while others will auto defend. The icons on each character pane describe which action they'll take (sword = fight, shield = defend, etc).

The other weird thing about the game is how you get new party members. If I recall right, in each town you can go into the save house and there will be a new party member there. Every party member starts at level 1, which can be a pain for the later joining members.

I just have all my party members attack for most of the game. You'll need more strategy for bosses, but there are very few bosses in PS games.

I don't know if it's different between regions, but in the Japanese version, you go to a town, then return to your house in Paseo and there might be a character waiting for you.

Anyway, I started my game. I really haven't had any troubles so far, aside from trying to collect money for weapons, and ultimately not really needing the weapons once I have the money to buy them.... I'm missing the map with my copy, but I happen to have the reproduction of it with my copy of the Sega Ages collection version for the Saturn. There's a lot of good information on the back about spell damage, who can equip certain items, etc, but I don't really like opening it up, so I've just been looking at the manual for spell information, and winging it on equipment.... Would really like to find scans of it somewhere online.

I'm up to level 8 with the main character, something silly like 14 or 15 with Nei, and I think Rudger is level 7 or 8. Headed to find Tim (I sure hope they just gave her some generic girls name when localizing the game) after finishing the abandoned Shuren Warehouse. Not finding this game very cryptic, though. Seems pretty straightforward to me. Maybe I'm just used to old school RPGs at this point, though. I'm also not that far in to the game. I'm sure if it starts taking me to Dezolis, I'll be cursing the designers. (Especially because I don't have a map for it.)

I don't really mind the overlay in the dungeons either. It's probably a little too much, and if I had to choose between having it or not having it, I think I'd choose the latter, but I kind of like the effect.

Oh yeah; Fuck those blood spewing toads! --Jerks.

I bet the original Japanese dialogue makes more sense regarding where to go and what to do. Most of us are playing a version with a late 80s English translation... Scary stuff.

That is a distinct possibility.
