And I still say the spirit of the summer challenge isn't just to clear out some games from your backlog... :D

Yall harping on how every title has to be a classic is enough for me to stop doing this. That and the fact that Prince of Persia Sands of Time on the PC is one of the worst ports I have ever played.

really it's just me, so feel free to ignore it entirely.

don't let me be your excuse for not playing the rest of your list - which actually now is mostly classics, i believe (except for The Cave, anyway).

You and pierrot. That said, what about Modern Classics? Take a game like The Last of Us: it's already being touted as one of the greatest games of its generation and this decade so far. Yes, it released late to be in this year's summer challenge, but what if it appeared in someone's 2014 challenge? Would we decry it for being too recent, despite the accolades heaped upon it?

yup

"instant classic" is stupid marketing mumbo jumbo

classics need to be seasoned with at least some time. for games, I'd say a few years after production for a console dwindles and its place/influence can be better gauged.

So where do you set this arbitrary number? And does this mean you wouldn't consider a launch title of a console that is still going strong six, seven years later? Is it still too early to judge the place of games like Condemned, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Call of Duty 2, or Quake 4?

well, I started playing a month ago now so let's take a look at my progress. (Spoiler: it's not good.)

1. Castlevania Rondo of Blood
Played a few levels on PSP. Really good game, but I'm running low on lives and the thought of starting over is a little upsetting. I can see myself playing more though this Summer, as it's a good pick-up-and-play PSP game.

2. Doom
Made it to first boss. Died a bunch of times. Ragequit.

3. Eye of the Beholder

4. Final Fantasy
The only game I've beaten so far. I really loved the PSP port, as stated elsewhere. And really, beating this game led a bit to me straying from this list in general cuz then I felt like continuing on with FF II. (Though, that was maybe a bad idea).

5. Killer7
6. Nights Into Dreams

7. Ninja Gaiden
See "Doom" entry above.

8. Panzer Dragoon

9. Resident Evil 4
Started it up, played for half hour or an hour. I still really like this game. But I'm also aware of just how long it is, and kind of wondering if it was a bad idea to pick this one to begin with.

10. Tomb Raider

...titles above not in bold are ones I haven't even powered-on once yet. Bottom line is I'm less than motivated so far. There's been a lot of new games coming out I'm interested in, a lot of new-er games dropping in price that I'm finally picking up, and just a lot of new additions to my collection that I'm just more in the mood to play. So we'll see how it goes...

Well, based on everyone else's list I figured it wasn't about modern classics but retro classics, not to mention we're on a retro site. I think the OP gives emphasis on retro classics as well.

I think the point of the challenge was to play those games where people go "What!?! You never played that before!". I don't think you would necessarily hear that about The Last of Us in 2014, as opposed to say Chrono Trigger.

As for the cut off, I was thinking anything before the Gamecube/Xbox would be considered old enough :o.

Not that I'm going to exactly make fun of anyone for playing modern games.

I agree with this. To me, the OP made it very clear that this was about retro classics that "everybody" has played. I'm not sure why everybody is getting all up-in-arms about being pestered about having newer non-classic games on their lists. Although I think that it's fair to say that several PS2 era games can already be considered classics, it's safe to stay with the Dreamcast on back.

For my progress? Eh... We've been tied up watching too many movies. The only game I've been playing is Pokemon and that's not in my list as I've already completed it (several times). Vacation starts this weekend and I've loaded up my PSP with emulators and roms. I'm hoping to tackle some of these while we're away.

Have you tried a dogbone?
No, but now that you mentioned it, I probably should. I guess I hadn't really considered it since i have a toaster, but the dog bone controllers are pretty rare, aren't they? It seems more like the SNES controller design, so that would probably feel a bit more comfortable. If the d-pad is more like the original NES d-pad, I'd probably still chew up my thumb on it, though.

Prices on Ebay seem a little steep. Maybe my semi-local retro shop has one.
