If your characters are dying left and right, you need to plan carefully and learn more about the game system. That's why I love Fire Emblem.
I planned on starting with Hard mode, but should I just dive into Lunatic? FE is generally hard, but Tactics Ogre was no problem.
Lunatic is really hard for like the first four chapters(i.e. first four levels), but you can get by with a good strategy and a tiny bit of luck. Of course, your strategy will mostly revolve around Frederick. After that, if you don't mind using DLC, the EXPonential Growth map makes grinding up your characters quick and easy. Some people don't seem to like using DLC. It didn't bother me. It seems almost mandatory on higher difficulties. Once you build up one or two units, you can stop relaying on Frederick so much and your strategic options open up a bit.
For me, I found Donnel to be a great help. He starts out weak then becomes very powerful quickly. You need to recruit him in an optional level though that pops up early in the game. Your avatar character can also get really strong after one or two reclasses and once he gets some sorcerer abilities. Finding him a good wife helps too, but even alone he can be a wrecking machine. I was destroying enemy after enemy on each map in the last few chapters with my avatar paired with his wife Cordelia, with Donnel hanging back to deal with any pesky reinforcements all by himself.
Also, children units can be really powerful if you plan ahead for them. I kind of messed up, but if you plan for what skills they'll inherit and grind up their parents a bit to give them good stats, I'm told they can be pretty dangerous
For me, I found Lunatic just right. It'll kick your ass hard for 4 or 5 levels, but then evens out a bit if you use the DLC to build up your units a bit. It never really becomes a cake walk though. I hear Lunatic+ mode is insane though, haven't tried it yet, but I've heard fans say Lunatic+ is blatantly cheap. Enemies all have ridiculous skills on Lunatic+ AND insane stats.
