I can't be of any help here, but wanted to chime in.
I still have a launch 60gig, and I've taken every pre-caution for it to not overheat. It has its own shelf on the entertainment stand, I clean it out once a month or so with compressed air, and I keep the bottom elevated with water bottle caps at each corner.
For what it's worth, I use it constantly for games and movies and media streaming.
Ultimately, you may have gotten a lemon. Or, it sounds like you bought it used, the person before you did NOT take care of it and over heated it. If you say you are doing everything right, then I'm gonna say that it already was doomed before you bought it. Get it warrantied ASAP!
PS3 "Your system has become hot"
Re: PS3 "Your system has become hot"
I am the person that sold him the system. It only ever sat on my TV stand. Plenty of room to breathe as the stand is open on all sides. Not one of the ones that is only open in front.
I only owned it for a month or so before selling. Switched to the white PS3. Trust me, abuse is not the issue. I doubt vlame abused it either.
Unfortunately I have not located the receipt for this PS3.

yeah, it sounds like just an unlucky unit then. Won't Sony warranty it without a receipt?

Re: PS3 "Your system has become hot"
It seems like a one time issue, very scary though.
It is on a shelf alone, on top of a thin tpb graphic novel. And 3 in or more space all around.

Re: PS3 "Your system has become hot"
I have a super slim 500gb myself and haven't had a problem with it. I logged about 200 hours so far on the system, give or take, since September of last year and no problems thus far. Have had several hours sessions a few times and it wasn't really hot.
