I agree. The soundtrack alone blows away Starfox 64, and a lot of other games as well. The scoring system is also better than the irritating one in Starfox 64 that is overly dependent on players using bombs in really awkward, un-intuitive ways. Not to mention that Starfox 64 just goes overboard with the amount of enemies it throws at you in some stages. It's excessive. There's a level of restraint in the original game, not present in SF64. The lack of real voice acting also works to the original game's advantage. It's much less embarrassing to play within earshot of other people than Starfox 64. Plus, the non-arwing stages in Starfox 64 were crappy and unnecessary, particularly the god awful underwater stage, which you can add to the legions of other bad, underwater levels we've seen in so many games over the decades.
In terms of level design and game play though (not counting the scoring system and non-arwing stages), Starfox 64 is still a good game, and it looks better than the original, but that's not really a fair comparison given the hardware. As a piece of tech, Starfox is more impressive for its respective system than Starfox 64 is.
Starfox is a masterpiece with dated visuals. Starfox 64 is a worthy, but very flawed sequel.
