Try Dynasty Warriors 3 on the hardest difficulty. Some of the later stages will get pretty intense. Factor in the insane requirements for every character's ultimate weapon as well as some of the secret items, which all must be done on the hardest difficulty setting, and the game is just plain brutal. On the hardest difficulty setting, archers will rape you, enemy generals will own you and use their soldiers as decoys to attack you from behind, your army is mostly useless and will die within the first minute of gameplay in one of the game's later stages. Plus, enemies are very aggressive on this difficulty setting(despite every worthless Dynasty Warriors review you will ever read saying that enemy AI is dumb and never attack you). The sheer number of enemies coming at you in DW 3 is insane too. They toned this down in DW 4 which disappointed a lot of people.

What makes all this hell worth it though is that by meeting the right requirements on the hardest difficulty will unlock "death attack" weapons for certain characters. These weapons have a special attack that will one hit kill enemies and leave their corpses on the ground with a strange purple haze. Enemy generals are immune to this but will take heavy damage. Trick to these weapons though, is that enemies can easily interrupt your death attack so you need a little bit of skill. The Extreme Legends expansion for DW 3 made things even harder with an even higher difficulty setting called Chaos I believe
Can I get an Amen!

I love Dynasty Warriors, but they ain't as easy as everyone says. I once saw Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors 5 take on an ENTIRE ARMY, and I mean army. We're talking over 100 footmen and at least 12 officers, including some of the heaviest hitters, and Lu Bu still kept kicking their asses. Every time he swung his weapon, hordes of bodies would go flying in all directions, and hordes more would be surging and leaping into the middle to fight him. I watched this fight go on for nearly half an hour. And I couldn't beat the level because killing him was the objective!

Lu Bu is scary, which makes beating him a highlight of every installment for me. Some officers you can ignore until you feel like taking them on, because you know your army can keep them busy for at least a little while. But when Lu Bu hits the battlefield, you can usually expect your army to start getting its ass royally kicked unless you take him on and there's usually a good chance he'll kick your ass unless you're character has been powered up a bit. Beating him always feels awesome, especially after all the "Holy shit! It's Lu Bu" dialogue that you hear from other officers in your army. I love that morale boost you get after killing him. And he always gets pissed at you :lol:

It seems insignificant to some people, but I also love the DW series for teaching me about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel and a little about Chinese history. I even tried reading the Romance of the Three Kingdoms once, but never got all the way through it. It's tough reading material and really, really long, but very interesting

There was a long running soap opera in China about it too. I'll try to find the name.

EDIT: Found the Wikipedia page! Should give you an idea of the scope of it:

Read the book;
I wouldn't recommend english though (I think its just one of those things you can't really translate well)
Original form would be best (but I doubt anyone can read it enjoyably though)
I have first of the books...damn its a hard read
i need money...

Yeah, it would be nice to find a nicely translated, easy to read version

That tv series sounds quite ambitious

At first was gonna disagree but re-read jEckt and it feats quite good. FM4 doesn't make you want to scream and throw the controller and has a great accomplishment feeling of choosing the right tactic for the challenge proposed. I was gonna suggest Shinobi but it has ridiculuos check points and difficulty, I finished it but gave me nightmares just thinking of playing complete levels just because I'm not perfect in jumping and timing my kills.
