Any good modern games for the ps2 (or ps3) that has that retro difficulty?
You know that difficulty where its an actual "challenge"
The type of game where you die a 10+ times in a row, but you can just taste victory around the corner
The type of game where you chuck your controller across the room and you just reach to turn off your system... it pulls you back in for another round
This is different from simulated difficulty (? seems like a fitting choice of words)
Not the type where it forces you to play against a dumb ai with beefed up HP
Not the type that has ridiculous check/save points
All I can Think of at the moment is
Devil May Cry 3
Maximo
...Fatal Frame (...hate that game...but I couldn't stop playing it...; the difficulty for me was my fear of virtual ghosts)
guys have any suggestion? I got some time to kill in a few days...wanted to see what games I have missed.

I think you are looking for an RPG of some sort, but if not, you should try some shmups. Always challenging, always fun, always coming back for more.

You may have hated it, but there are three Fatal Frames on the PS2. The 4th one is currently in the works.

Front Mission 4 has plenty of moments like that at around the midpoint.

Call of Duty 4 on veteran difficulty. I died way more than 10 times on several of the later levels. It has checkpoints, but it is the getting to the checkpoint that is the triumphant moment. It is definitely old-school tough with a huge sense of accomplishment. I played it on 360, but I think it's identical on PS3.

I remember playing front mission (forgot which) on the playstation.... that game was frustrating at points (but overall a good game); maybe its time to look on ebay for Front Mission 4
Never thought of Call of Duty series as a difficult (wonderful pacing compared to other shooters); maybe its time to rent that game
RPG never felt like a challenge for me personally... cause I grind way too much
shmup never had a lasting appeal (besides ikaruga... ) could you suggest some good ones?
I might be picking up Viewtiful Joe (costs under 5 bucks I believe)

COD4 on the hardest difficulty is difficult, especially the final level. I didn't think it was so bad other than that, though. But I was also playing it for PC, so...

Get a copy of Shinobi since it's one of the most challenging games ever! And if you liked DMC3 get DMC4 naturally?
Furthermore do get God of War 1 & 2, sure they're easier than DMC but they are challenging at the higher difficulty levels. I found Shadow of Rome to be stiff as well, but in a good way. And of course don't forget Godhand which is quite hard if you don't know what you're doing! If you like to take on hordes Spartan: Total Warrior comes highly recommended as well.
I could also recommend Headhunter Redemption and the Getaway but read reviews and watch footage on Youtube before purchasing either! And for shoot'em ups I'd recommend the Metal Slug Anthology since it's good value, and try Contra: Shattered Soldier, but I have to say Contra 4 for the DS is quite harder.

yea im planning on hopping to toys r us to grab some games (they have that buy 2 get 1 free deal going on)...
if they have that dmc bundle (I don't have dmc 1 or 2) will they count it in their deal
I was looking it god hand...honestly the level design looks uninspiring... but would you still recommend it?
I'm planning on getting 2 games (slanting towards action genre) and one rpg (to kill the time)
I personally prefer old school rpg... so maybe wild arms 5 or star ocean might be a good pick
I played halfway through God of War... but for me it seems the fun is all in the first part...maybe I need to give it another try
Metal Slug series are the best; can't count how many quarters I've lost playing that game on those cabs with 4 games in 1

When I finished Shinobi with everything unlocked and all S ranks, I wanted to break the disc in half and through both pieces out the window. I also felt incredibly proud.
God of War is a cake walk on any difficulty. Rage of Poseidon=easy game. It's still a fun and fantastic game though.
Now God of War 2 I have heard is much harder on its highest difficulty setting.
The Red Star is awesome and very old school. It's beat'em up meets shmup. Most people find the normal game tough, but you can unlock a faster EX mode as well
The Dynasty Warriors series get labeled as a button mashing, easy games by dumbass reviewers who write reviews without fully playing their games. Try Dynasty Warriors 3 on the hardest difficulty. Some of the later stages will get pretty intense. Factor in the insane requirements for every character's ultimate weapon as well as some of the secret items, which all must be done on the hardest difficulty setting, and the game is just plain brutal. On the hardest difficulty setting, archers will rape you, enemy generals will own you and use their soldiers as decoys to attack you from behind, your army is mostly useless and will die within the first minute of gameplay in one of the game's later stages. Plus, enemies are very aggressive on this difficulty setting(despite every worthless Dynasty Warriors review you will ever read saying that enemy AI is dumb and never attack you). The sheer number of enemies coming at you in DW 3 is insane too. They toned this down in DW 4 which disappointed a lot of people.
What makes all this hell worth it though is that by meeting the right requirements on the hardest difficulty will unlock "death attack" weapons for certain characters. These weapons have a special attack that will one hit kill enemies and leave their corpses on the ground with a strange purple haze. Enemy generals are immune to this but will take heavy damage. Trick to these weapons though, is that enemies can easily interrupt your death attack so you need a little bit of skill. The Extreme Legends expansion for DW 3 made things even harder with an even higher difficulty setting called Chaos I believe
