Mainly because of the expectations. With the rumors of Radical Dreamers around the internet at the time, and how it featured Magus; rumors of Chrono Cross being the reworking of Radical Dreamers as a true sequel. A lot of people held unreasonable expectations for Chrono Cross as a literal continuation of Chrono Trigger, at the time. Back when Final Fantasy IV was released in the US, the internet wasn't around to give people too much false hope and misinformation. Heck most people didn't even know that IV and VI were mis-numbered in the US until VII came out. Not to mention that, as a late 80s RPG, the original Final Fantasy's story was pretty self contained, and simplistic. By 2000, expectations for the sequels to Final Fantasy games were different than with Chrono Cross. Perhaps not any less severe, but different.ZeroAX wrote:pierrot wrote: I agree that Chrono Cross shouldn't be thought of as a literal sequel to Chrono Trigger. Although there are some moments in Chrono Cross where they threw in some links to Trigger--probably to appease fans. (That didn't work out so well.) Stylistically, ideologically, Cross is quite a departure from Trigger. In all honesty, I think Cross strays just enough from the formula set down in Trigger to be alienating for a lot of its fans. Trigger's legacy aside, I think Chrono Cross stands incredibly well on its own. I think the battle mechanics in Cross are pretty brilliant if one is willing to invest in something different, and the art direction/story telling in Cross are just excellent. I think it definitely deserves to be remembered as one of the best RPGs on the original Playstation. That, said, FFIX is still a great choice, too.
That's weird. Aren't FF games exactly like that when it comes to their sequels? New experiences, new characters, new worlds, new gameplay style? So why is that a plus for the series and a negative (for fans, as you say) for CC?

Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
got the correct Doom LE disc. I'm on the third level but damn. Coming off Half-Life with DC controls I feel like a moron trying to play this with a "normal people" controller. I hate to say I'm not too confident I can proceed on default difficulty.
EDIT: Yup. I suck. But lowered the difficulty and having a lot more fun now.
EDIT: Ok, I'm at the last stage of the first mission. This is the end of the shareware game as I remember? It's just got those 2 big devilish creatures that come out and wreck you. Is there some better strategy than 'just try to shoot them and dodge their projectiles'? Cuz I'm sucking at that.

Yeah, that's the last stage of the first scenario if memory serves. Don't think there is really any strategy at hand other than strafe and fire. Generally with Doom though the closer you are = more damage, I think I always charge and shotgun them in the face at that part.

Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
All right, made a few changes, but here's what I'm set on
Contra: Hard Corps (Gen)
Quake (N64)
Battalion Wars (GC)
Mega Man (GG)
Super R-Type (SNES)
Magician Lord (AES)
Warriors of Fate ll (SAT)
Record of Lodoss War (DC)
Kirby's Adventure (NES)
Final Fantasy lll/Vl (SNES) - For this one; it's been at least 10 years since I gave this an actual attempt; I think it's time to revisit why I loved this game so much.

Spent some more time with MediEvil this morning and I seem to be liking it well enough. It has a lot of charm and a well realized world to play around in. I am thinking this was a good choice, so far.

Re: Summer Game Challenge 2013 - Begin when ready!
I had a free night last night, after doing all the yard work as soon as I got home and my wife was still in town. So I beat the first 53 stages of Sutte Hakkun last night. I had never gotten off the first island before, now I am halfway done with the second. Only three puzzles had me really stumped. They teach you some tricks you have to use in later stages early and if you do not master Hakkun's jumping it will be difficult. But the no lives, no timer, and built in savestate, all make the game just an enjoyable little title. It is a shame Nintendo has not moved on this series, it would make a great downloadable title (since it was originally a Satellaview game). So far my only compliant is that I wish it had a better variety of music. 47 more stages to go, but I wont get to play them tonight.

^Awesome (and motivating).
I'm still on title one on my list; EspGaluda. Hitting TLB consistently, with 2 lives on a couple occasions, but just an absolutely horribly unending battle. I'm starting to get through the first form ok, but it's just brutal after that - 60-70 seconds of blasting and dodging only to see the middle health bar go down 25%. I'm not great at calculating time when playing, but i'd guesstimate that last boss is a 4-minute job where you need to be flawless...or at least have a stockpile of 3-4 lives. So intense.

Good work on ESP, mjmjr25. Id say you are about right on with the final battle length at four minutes. Ive never 1cced it but your work is amazing.
If you decide to play Sutte Hakkun, 3-9 and 4-3 were the hardest stages to me. Both came down to bad jumping on my part. 3-9 I finished with 39 points.

You can do it!!! I'm about 2 missions from the first mission's end. I haven't had to many problems if you go a little slower than in modern FPS games.noiseredux wrote:got the correct Doom LE disc.
