FFIX is a throwback to earlier games.

It's a throwback for people who actually played the old games in the series. But since most people (specially at the time) had only played FF 7 and 8, 9 must have seem like an extreme departure from the series's previous games

1. Iron Brigade - PC
2. Adventures of Lolo - NES
3. Back to the Future - PC
4. Stacking - PC
5. either Battlekid or Blaster Master - NES

So I finished both Iron Brigade and Stacking last weekend. So I am upping my list to a proper 10. Iron Brigade is a super fun tower defense title and while it is plagued with some bugs for online, most caused by Games for Windows Live, it was a hoot playing through it with a friend of mine. I still have the DLC to do, but that will happen tonight hopefully.

Stacking was a very clever puzzle game. My only complaints were that some of the answers were way out in left field and I wish they had a way to speed up text. I had to use a walkthrough to get a couple of the more crazy answers just to complete the puzzles every way I could (like using the bear...). Still didnt 100% it because I am missing three dolls, but I just for the life of me cant figure out where they are.

New list:
1. Iron Brigade - PC
2. Adventures of Lolo - NES
3. Back to the Future - PC
4. Stacking - PC
5. Blaster Master - NES
6. Mother 3 - GBA
7. Prince of Persia Sands of Time - PC
8. The Cave - PC
9. Sutte Hakkun - SNES
10. Wonderboy in Monster World - Gen/MD
Subject to change if my mood changes. Or if a more fitting title comes by.

I've been unknowingly already participating, though it's been more of a Spring challenge for me. I've beaten Castlevania, Super Castlevania, Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Metroid recently. I'd like to start a real Summer Games Challenge list to start in June though. I'm curious, what is the consensus for how old a game has to be to be a "classic"? I have a feeling that everyone's opinion is going to be different, but I'd like to be playing along with some idea of rules for this.

I personally think you're safe with most last-gen games. Definitely PS2/oXBox and Gamecube. Early games for modern systems might be arguable too, but probably not as easily.

The classic thing I hold as a loose reasoning, which is why I chose several more modern games. Also because most of the true classics I have left to beat are RPGs... But to appease DSH, everything Tim Schafer touches is an instant classic.

EDIT: found some typos and swapped out some games.

Alright, last gen and older sounds about right. I'm just going to include a BONUS! games list to include the games I also plan on beating this summer. I can't give up on them just because of my Summer Game Challenge!

Summer Game Challenge contenders:
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario Bros. 2
Double Dragon
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario Kart
Sonic the Hedgehog
Tetris Attack
Duck Tales
Metroid Prime
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Doom
The Illusion of Gaia

Bonus! non-classic summer list:
Fallout New Vegas
Bioshock
Magic Sword
Kirby Mass Attack

This list is looking quite embarrassing. I guess I tend to overlook playing through the classics for some reason. I'm always looking for hidden gems and stuff I haven't heard of. Ridiculous that I haven't played through so many great games I already have. Please help me whittle my list down to ten. Let me know if you think I should swap any of these out for something else in my backlog.

No reason to be embarrassed, you have an awesome summer of gaming ahead you. I am supremely jealous that this will be your first time to beat Mario 2, Chrono Trigger, Zelda 1, and Duck Tales. Those are four of my favorite games of all time. Actually you have inspired me to change one of mine to the Zelda 1 Second Quest. Which I have never finished despite giving it "what for" several times.

@Fast - interested in your take on Sutte Hakkun, i'm half tempted to switch one of mine around and play with you. I've only dabbled on both Umihara Kawase and Sutte - both really need some more attention.

I am super jealous of your boxed copy. I love the game but it gets very difficult about midway through. I am determined to power through this time.
