I remember when Modern Warfare 2 on the PC got boycotted and sold no copies.

Valve had the gall to make a sequel instead of continuing to make more campaigns available for free of L4D1.

Oh, OK. I remember that, now. They had promised ongoing support of L4D and it got very little because they instead redirected that effort to L4D2. Their loss. I know tons of peeps who prefer the original.

Not like this is the first time Nintendo has done this. Some rumors say they pulled IP rights on James Rolfe back when he was the Angry Nintendo Nerd. That's the whole reason he changed it to Angry Video Game Nerd. I know it says on his site that he changed it to prevent trademark issues, so whether he initiated it or they did, it's the same result.

But he couldn't sell merchandise with the word Nintendo on them. They didn't try to stop him from making any money off his reviews.

I think Nintendo is shooting themselves in foot with this decision. Lets Play is no different than a fan tribute, a review, fan-fic, or a song cover. This is fan-interaction that gives Nintendo free publicity.

However to be directly confrontational with those same fans, and slapping on the wrist because they love your product; is just gonna drive away that fanbase.

Legally, they did nothing wrong. But they did make a huge mistake with the fans.
