Re: recommend some super spooky movies
Uzumaki is easily my favorite Japanese horror film of all time.

Some weird/surreal Italian favorites of mine:
Black Sunday (aka The Mask of Satan)
The Beyond
Zombie (aka Zombi 2)
Suspiria
Inferno
I know you said no slashers, but High Tension is intense if you can forgive a dumb ending. And anything David Cronenberg worked on in the 70s/80s might also be up your alley.
Cemetery Man is a great one. Definitely not a typical zombie flick.
If you want massive weirdness, track down Nekromantic. Oh! And "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" is my favorite Japanese sci-fi/horror film.
They're both mainstream titles but I thought The Blair Witch Project and The Haunting were both masterpieces of the horror genre.
The Holy Mountain is a great movie. But I'm always surprised people who aren't interested in the occult like it - a large portion of the movie is just Hermetic symbolism. I love it!
I stopped reading it because my horror fandom is cyclical and I've been having a long "not so much" phase, but you should check out Rue Morgue magazine. Hands-down the best horror magazine I'm aware of!

I'll second AUDITION.
Re: recommend some super spooky movies
If you haven't watched many David Cronenberg films his style is pretty similar to what it sounds like your looking for, Scanners and Videodrome are couple of my favorites. I also really enjoyed Zombie Lake and thought it was pretty scary despite it's slow pacing and 1970s special effects. The only movie I have seen that was too horrifying to finish was the original I Spit On Your Grave (I have heard the remake is at least as bad) I wouldn't really recommend it but it's definitely terrifying.

Try Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975). It is a conventional film that follows a very strange story, and it has an uncanniness that you do not often encounter in film. I thought it was very good, somewhat unsettling film. My wife thought it was horrifying, but could not explain why. It should be exactly what you are looking for.
Also, House (1977). It is awesome.
Finally, Kwaidan (1964). It is a collection fo beautiful Japanese ghost stories, and it remains my favorite Japanese horror film.
EDIT: Just kidding! You should also watch The Changeling (1980). If the execrable Amityville Horror scared you, then The Changeling will give you a heart attack.

Well, there's Session 9. It's not really a success in terms of its plot, but it offers up one of the creepiest locales I've ever seen for a horror film.
Gozu is another favorite of mine by Takashi Miike. Since other folks recommended his work in Audition and Ichi the Killer, I figure why not throw that one in too? And Visitor Q.
If you're interested in an older classic, I'd say look into the Val Lewton films, like I Walked with a Zombie.
And then there are the Coffin Joe movies: At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse, Hallucinations of a Deranged Mind, Awakening of the Beast, The Bloody Exorcism of Coffin Joe, Embodiment of Evil, and The Strange World of Coffin Joe...in which Coffin Joe does not even appear.

The Spanish flick "El orfanato" is decently creepy. If you do not mind subtitles. I watched it for the first time in a dark basement with the sound cranked. It has great atmosphere, and is not as far fetched as other movies.
Re: recommend some super spooky movies
Horror films hardly fit their label. Maybe for easily-disturbed folks. However I do find more elements of dread in non-horror dramas. Wake in Fright comes to mind.

Of course the ultimate horror is man-made and intrinsic to human nature. War films focusing on real atrocities just rattle me deeply. Come and See is a pristine example of war horror.
I'll come up with more suggestions later. In the meantime check out Timeout's list of their top horror films. http://www.timeout.com/london/film/best-horror-films
