Does System Shock 2 count as an action RPG? It has a lot of depth in the gameplay mehcanics but the combat is in real time, the game's main focus is in survival and resoursce management and there's no dialogue since every one is dead and you listen to audio logs.
Since I played Valkyrie Profile quite recently I gave my votes to YS and Genesis version of Shadowrun, but I really have no clue which version I should be playing first

Voted for Crystalis and Popful Mail, although I would be playing the Super Famicom version of Popful Mail which does differ quite a bit from the Sega CD version. Like others, there are a few games on this list I've never considered action rpgs though.

Ys and Crystalis.
Might as well vote for the true Action RPG's.

Ys II is my top pick - though I'm going to have to replay Ys I first.
Tales of Phantasia is choice #2. Because it's been on my pile of shame for longer than it should be?

See I would consider Ys, Popful Mail, and Secret of Mana as JRPGs as well as action RPG

A game isn't only an action RPG if it plays like zelda with experience points. It is an action rpg if it has real time action in battle where the player directly controls the characters. Or basically combat that isn't turn or menu based.
Tales games have action based combat. The only difference is that you have a party and go into a different battle screen. Playing Tales is a unique experience from a game like a final fantasy or Breath of Fire.

Hoping Brave Fencer Musashi can win, but it doesn't look like it will. I'll hold back my votes for a while...

Then what's Mario & Luigi doing on here? I thought it was strictly turn-based (or am I confusing it with something else)?Jmustang1968 wrote:A game isn't only an action RPG if it plays like zelda with experience points. That's the only one I don't know about and took the word of whoever nominated it. Those games never interested so I don't know how they play. If it isn't an action rpg I can remove it...Opa Opa wrote:Then what's Mario & Luigi doing on here? Re: Together RPG - Action RPG - Vote Now!
It's turn based, but all attacking and defending uses timed commands. Thats probably why it was suggested, but I'd still call it a turn based JRPG myself.Jmustang1968 wrote:That's the only one I don't know about and took the word of whoever nominated it. Oh, don't forget the PS1 port for Tales of Phantasia. Many consider it the definitive version, and a nice fan translation came out a few months ago.
