For what it's worth, I also really didn't like how they handled the character.

I get that movies will be different from the source material. That's fine, I accept that. That alone doesn't dictate bad or good with movies. I think that the complaints in this case are valid though because the Mandarin is literally a completely different character in everything but name. It's totally fair to be disappointed with that if you like the Mandarin and had (reasonable) hope that this movie was going to have a good take on the character.

Sure there's plenty of disappointment to be had, but it's not like we haven't seen great movie adaptions of villains.

Really though, I'm not saying that it's a fundamentally disappointing character. If I had no investment in or hopes for the character I probably would have enjoyed it. I'm just disappointed that I got something completely out of the range of what I was reasonably hoping for.
