If anything, you are late to the party. I have not been impressed by a super hero movie since "The Dark Knight"...
(That said...I still have not seen The Avengers. Based on the discussion on this forum, however, it will have to permanently transform my life to live up to the hype...)
That said, in the span of 4-5 years or so before TDK, there were a lot of comic book/graphic novel films that i quite liked (Hellboy 1 and 2, Hulk, Sin City, V for Vendetta, Road to Perdition, Spider Man 2, etc.).
I didn't care much for Sin City, but besides that, I agree with you that all of those movies were more interesting than what we are seeing today. (Also,
X2: X-Men United was great, and if we are discussing comic book movies - rather than super hero movies - then I must admit that I very much enjoyed
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.)
Personally, I think that comic book films have become such big business that studios are not willing to take risks with them anymore. (That is, if they play it safe, the downside risk is low and the upside potential is very high.) Accordingly, I don't think that they are taking risks with them anymore, and I think that is why we are seeing less interesting films that all follow the same basic story arc.
