I still can't stand how touchy the controls are on the ps2 version, it takes away all my "flow." I still just play the saturn version.

I never had a Saturn or was able to play NiGHTS when it was first released. Would my $10 be well spent?

I might say yes just to experience it. Regardless of how I feel about the game, a lot of people love it and it's considered by many as one of the greats in the Saturn library. If you have the cash why not?

For those who aren't aware, the game has been patched so the control issues have been fixed.

I bought a copy out of devotion to NiGHTS - it's a game that was hugely influential on me. However, I haven't been in the mood to actually play it yet.

Now, if they had botched the port and screwed things up, or if it was a full price release, it would be understandable, but that review makes no mention of that. From the sounds of it, it's just like the original, but in HD and with Christmas NiGHTS (and no doubt other extras) bundled in.

I know I'm a retro gamer on a retro gaming site, so maybe I'm "out of touch" and biased, but if you ask me the game has aged brilliantly. The game is still additive and fun as hell and this HD port is very welcome.
Nights didn't even deserve a 5.5 at release.
genuinely curious as to why you think that. i always had fun with the game, felt like it had a little more polish than a lot of Sega games from that era. not a 9/10 but at least a 7.5/8 for me.

I just got this just a few days ago, are you guys saying that the controls were worse than this before?

Not that they are bad, but they don't seem as responsive as the original, and as they seem to have stretched the image into widescreen it looses the feeling of speed.

I flicked over to the Saturn version (within the HD game) and instantly the speed is back. Unfortunately it plays inside a small window. Not sure why it couldn't fill the vertical part of the screen, or why the HD version couldn't play in 4:3 if they couldn't be bothered to do it properly.

Other than this, its great and I'm loving playing it again. Its cool that you can practise the bosses without having to play the entire level to get to them

Comparatively, I think you're totally right. I enjoy the Saturn version of this game much more than the Xbox 360 port of the game. The controls feel much better on the Saturn, and I played the current version of the digital rerelease as well as its first edition before the controls were tweaked via patch. It plays easier, I don't know what it was but I was able to get through the first boss stage on my first try on the Saturn version whereas I struggled a bit on the Xbox 360 port and had to retry a few times. Call me what you want, but the Saturn version still plays better.

Unbias note: I had the digital version of the game before I even owned a Sega Saturn!

I haven't played the HD re-release with the patch, but from playing the demo, the directional control was just a steaming pile, as far as I'm concerned. It felt a little bit like playing the game with digital control instead of full analog. Instead of smooth 360 degree range of motion, the HD remake seemed to hang on certain directions: I had a hell of a time getting Nights to fly straight or in a perfectly circular loop at times, for instance.

I'm happy enough with the Saturn and PS2 releases, but if the controls were fixed in the HD versions, then it's certainly a good value.
