Honestly, I played FF7 and FF6 before knowing anything about their stories, and the reveals did almost nothing for me. There's so little subtlety and nuance left in story telling, and I feel it has a lot to do with the way reveals and twists start a lot more conversation, as they're far simpler things for the average person to understand, and associate a story with. It's tragic to me to imagine that, "The really sad ending' implies the main character is going to die."
This a thousand times. Really, a thousand thousand times.

Also, I use also a lot. I should either A) Finish my post first and then review it vefore posting it, so I don't keep adding "final paragraphs" to the post. Or B) Learn new words.
Aw man, that sucks!

Of course, as much as I'm not happy the story takes that particular turn, now I'm honestly more excited to play the game than I already was, and find out how that happens.

Thanks for sating my curiosity though.

Also, I too am guilty of saying also too much.

And what's that time limit my dear fellow? Cause I just got a game which is barely 6 months old spoilled to me.
I agree and I would add that it annoys me that people would always rather throw out the time limit excuse as a defense measure than to just say, "Oh, sorry man, I didn't mean to spoil that for you." I probably wouldn't be pissed at someone who said that

Instead, people usually respond in a way that basically communicates, "Oh, I spoiled that for you? Well sucks to be you then. What? I'm supposed to care. Screw you. It's your fault for not having watched it already. Nothing I do is wrong so don't expect an I'm sorry from me douchebag"

A decent human being should feel at least a tiny bit bad about having spoiled something for someone and should at least acknowledge that in some way. Just saying what I put in quotes in my first paragraph is enough, but more often than not I've noticed that when you point out that someone spoiled something for you they just get defensive, which strikes me as very self centered.

I hate "research studies". Like I'm supposed to care what some random group of dumb fucks thinks? It just a small sampling of some random people that you know nothing about. These so called "research studies" mean absolutely nothing.
Says a random guy on the internet.
Yes, so I am. That doesn't dissprove my point though. Ironically, I think it does just the opposite

Spoilers don't bother me. I like to know how things got to that point.. That is even more important, IMO.

In relation to this, I really do think the concept of "spoilers" are dramatically overblown. I tend not to get too emotionally invested in games/their characters, so maybe I'm an exception with that.
But in other media, a lot of times spoilers really don't ruin anything. Like in Citizen Kane, I imagine that everyone has had it spoiled that "Rosebud" was his sled. And that implies that on his deathbed, he was pining for his happy childhood days... the real thing is that ROSEBUD IS PRETTY IRRELEVANT TO THE MOVIE. Citizen Kane as an excellent film telling the story of a man in a way Hollywood never had before. To imply that the whole movie is about nostalgia for childhood just seems too reductionist a view to work.
Similarly, if you think Oedipus Rex is the story about a guy who gets freaky with his mom... YOU MIGHT BE MISSING OUT.

And with games, if the fact that Tomb Raider
has a T-Rex enemy
is a spoiler, you might as well declare it a spoiler when you find out that Robotnik comes back after the first level of Sonic 1. I mean, I guess I can understand why it matters, but I don't understand how this really damages anything.

NOW TO PUT ON MY HYPOCRISY-HAT:
I try not to spoil things for people because it tends to make them upset. But a lot of times this just makes my recommendations sound lame! (You should see Blue Velvet... it's a love story... with some emotional issues.)

And anytime somebody asks "do you want me to spoil this?" I generally decline. Because WHAT IF IT DOES MATTER! D:

So yeah, I don't think spoilers are all that bad. But I often act like they are anyway. :P

I think this subject heavily depends on a person's opinion.

Personally, I despise spoilers. I avoid trailers, teasers and articles for most movies and games. There are a couple of people I refuse to talk to about movies I haven't seen yet, because they keep insisting they aren't going to spoil anything and then throw out that "It has a sad ending" mentioned in this thread.

Although it won't keep me from playing the game or watching the movie, for me it takes away some of the enjoyment. I'm not saying it RUINS the movie/game (depending on the spoiler), but at time it takes some of the enjoyment out of it for me.
