What is wrong with gamers and spoilers FFS?

Post by ZeroAX »

Seriously gamers and gaming journalists, FUCK YOU. I just had a very important part of the ending to Assasin's Creed 3 spoiled to me by an online feature.

Why do journalists and fans of this medium not respect the right (well, ethical right....or whatever) of other people to enjoy the medium's best works WITHOUT spoiling all the good parts and making them lose their weight?

FF7:
The death of Aeris
Tomb Raider
The T-Rex boss (which I was lucky one to play without knowing about, and the jolt of fear and adrenaline it gave me was an amazing experience).

Seriously. FFS, I haven't watched psycho, it's been out for half a century, and yet people don't just casually talk about the shock twist in the movie (I actually learned about it from a guy who WARNED like 3 times that he would spoil the best part, and thus gave me plenty of time to pause and think if I want it spoiled to me).

Same with books. Nothing is considered "so well known there's no point hiding it" cause it's easy for fans of those mediums to understand that new people will be born and become book or film fans, and we should not ruin their experience by spoiling the best known parts.

But gamers think that everything after its release month is ok to talk about. That the ONLY generation of gamers, is the one they belong to.

Seriously can you imagine playing FF7 without knowing about the most talked about scene in the game? It might have registered a single emotion for me for one thing. But it was spoiled to me 5 years before I even played the game. FF6 on the other hand I knew nothing about, and the turns the story took excited me.

I'm just really frustrated the story of a game series I have been following for the past 3 years got spoiled to me, because I was waiting for a price drop.....

Yeah, I don't really think it's too much to ask that people at least give a warning/use spoiler tags before just blurting out major plot points.

I don't know. I always go into features and reviews and such expecting spoilers. Yeah, it's not hard putting a spoiler warning in a review, but I'd say that the viewer should just expect them to be present, after all the article has to talk about the game and provide some context, right?

But spoilers never fazed me. I always forget them when I'm done reading about it. It must be different for those who remember them.

You can pretty easily provide context without revealing major plot twists, etc.

One difference, at least for the examples given, is that they aren't spoilers for the entire plot.

Warnings before spoilers are fairly common. Realistically, it only takes a very small minority of people actually saying something in the first place.

That said, with regard to public discussion, it's only really an issue for relatively new media. Once something has been out there for a while, I'd say it's a lot more on the individual not wanting to see spoilers to avoid them, versus everyone else keeping plot twists secret.

It's a problem in all entertainment really. A lot of it is just reflective of how self centered most people are, they don't really care if they spoil something for others. Humans in general are just self centered by nature. How many times has this happened to you. You hear someone drop a major spoiler for something and then say, "oh spoilers" and laugh it off like they just did the funniest thing. Or say the ever so stupid, "Well that movie came out a year ago so big deal" Like spoilers have an expiration date on them. I just want to punch those people.

Some people are just stupid too, and don't even seem to realize when they are spoiling something. Saying something along the lines of, "The really sad ending" implies the main character is going to die for example. So right there, you just spoiled the ending in your really stupid attempt at being vague.

It really annoys me how spoilerish television is too. There are some shows I'll never watch simply because I've seen commercials for those shows on a weekly basis essentially laying out every major thing that is happening on the show giving me no reason to watch. When they were hyping Breaking Bad's fifth season, AMC had a commercial revealing a HUGE season 4 spoiler ruining it for anyone who hadn't watched it yet. I also hate how TV previews and promos tell you in advance when someone is going to die. Major character deaths have less impact when you're watching the whole episode waiting it for it to happen. Comic books will put the death right on the cover and tell every media outlet a month before the book even comes out

I don't know, it's just a sign of the weird times we live in. Nothing is sacred anymore LOL

I absolutely DESPISE this way of thinking, but it is unfortunately how most people think. Even in casual conversation, I try very hard to never spoil any thing for any show, movie, book, or any form of entertainment in existence no matter how old or new without a friendly warning beforehand. Unfortunately, that's a personal standard I have that most people don't. I can't count how many things I've wanted to check out have been spoiled ahead of time for me through just hearing someone talk about it in casual conversation. Something along the lines of, "Yeah, when so and so died in last night's episode of The Walking Dead, it was just like when MAJOR SPOILER FOR SOME SHOW GAMERFORLIFE HASN'T WATCHED YET died"

My favorite thing is when someone tells me I need to check out some awesome movie they just watched, and then proceed to tell me the entire ending

Then they wonder why I have no interest in seeing the movie

I hate "research studies". Like I'm supposed to care what some random group of dumb fucks thinks? It just a small sampling of some random people that you know nothing about. These so called "research studies" mean absolutely nothing.
