Come on, man. Don't you hate Shenmue? :P
I don't hate it, but I think it sucks at what it tries to accomplish and I found it painfully boring. And really, that opinion isn't at all unpopular in the grand scheme of things, becasue the Shenmue games weren't liked enough/didn't sell enough copies to produce enough demand for a third title.

There's also a lot of comments here that aren't differentiated between whether they are unpopular "on the whole" or "amongst gamers" or "amongst retro gamers" or even "amongst folks on this forum". So there's that.

In any case, I can't decide if this thread is simply a circle jerk of trying to see who can have and defend the most "unpopular gaming opinion" as a way of gaining some kind of distinction as a unique, independent thinker (who *OMG* can bring shock value) or if the thread is also functioning as a place for stupid trolling.

Probably a bit of all of that, but honestly I think a lot of people are just having fun.

I was expecting things to go in a nastier direction in this thread. I kinda just played along at first, but I ended up actually having a lot of fun myself. Some of the mini-discussions sparked by some of these opinions have ended up being kinda neat, anyway.

I also think that this is a pretty great thread. Someone presents an opinion he or she deems "unpopular" - be it unpopular generally, among games, among retro -gamers, or among the members of this site - and we discuss it. The thread has not yet degenerated, and it shows that the members of this forum are capable of discussing different opinions in a civil manner. It is also nice to get some different perspectives on commonly-held opinions or to find other members who share your "unpopular" views.

In any event, we're debating videogames (rather than important matters of public policy or deep ethical issues); so, anything written here is pretty much harmless. ("Pretty much"...if people start talking shit on Adventures of Lolo, we might have to break some legs.)

Back on topic (unless DSH's post was some sort of clever meta-unpopular opinion, in which case, we are continuing with the topic)...
fysyxx wrote:The PSX was not that great.
Wrong. It was awesome. EDIT: You may be correct if you are referring to the Japanese PSX rather than the PS1.
fysyxx wrote:I have never seen the appeal of either the Xbox 360 or PS3, the Wii was far better.
I see the appeal, but neither console appeals to me that much. I am perfectly happy with my Wii.
fysyxx wrote:The Wii U will continue that with the PS4/Xbox 720.
Too early to tell.
fysyxx wrote:Sega Saturn was the best 5th generation console.
The Saturn had some great games, but the console itself was not all that hot. It was ill-equipped for "3D" games - which were very popular in the late '90s - and managing saved games was cumbersome. The PS1 was the most user-friendly, and it had the best library.
fysyxx wrote:Dreamcast was the best 6th, but the GameCube came close.
They are both great consoles with great games, but the PS2's libray is incomparable.
fysyxx wrote:Metroid Prime 2 & 3 shouldn't have existed. Or Other M, Fusion, Zero Mission. With the exception of Metroid Prime, the series should have stopped at Super Metroid.
All of the games listed are at least good (and certainly better than Metroid II). Morevoer, more metroid is always better than less Metroid.
fysyxx wrote:Oracle of Ages and Seasons were the best top-down Zelda games.
You may be correct on this point. Those games are awesome.
fysyxx wrote:SSB Melee and Brawl sucked. Only the original was good.
All of them are only OK.
fysyxx wrote:New Super Mario Bros. U is second only to Super Mario Bros. 3 but just barely.
I don't have a WiiU; so, I cannot comment on this point.

Here's an unpopular opinnion, I think: VMUs are vastly overrated. The novelty of them wears off very quickly.
BoneSnapDeez wrote:The Dreamcast controller has the perfect ABXY button layout. I love how the shoulder buttons feel. The analog stick is fantastic and in the perfect spot.
I agree with all of this. But Sega really shot itself in the foot by not including a second analog stick even though Sony was smart enough to do so already in late 1997. Because the first stick was placed just in the right spot just like you said, it could've had the same kind of awesome dual analog stick system as the Xbox controller before Xbox. And by that I mean that the two sticks are at different height, rather than next to each other like on the Playstation controller. I'm quite confident that the Dreamcast would've lived longer than it did if it had done that, as developing 3D platformers, action adventure games, First Person Shooters and other 3D games for the system would've been a lot easier in that case. Just look at the Dreamcast ports of Quake, Unreal and Half Life, you have to use ABXY to move in them.
BoneSnapDeez wrote: I know the d-pad supposedly sucks, but I've never played a game that used the d-pad outside of menus. VMUs are also cool as shit.
All the fighting games Dreamcast is famous for?

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

^I recall reading something about how the Dreamcast controller port has the protocol for a second stick (or something like that, I don't quite know the technical details) so they could've easily made a dual analog controller down the line.

Maybe he means this?

Pet peeve: I do not like it when people write PSX for the original PlayStation. Why do this? Where does the X come from? It's a PlayStation, since it's the first, write PS1. The X is just confusing since there's an actual PSX.

It was abbreviated "psx" in magazines and such before there was even a Ps2. It just stuck.

Really, I blame Sony for actually making something called the "PSX"

'cause PSX was the abbreviation used for years before the PS2 (and therefore the actual PSX) existed.
