emulate it.

all of the 2600 games take up a very small amount of space.

Stella is the program you should use.

If you happen to like them, find the real thing.

Not exactly... I grew up with an Intellivision (born in 87 but got it along with 20 games for 2.00 at a garage sale in 93) and I was crazy excited to find one last year. That said... anything pre 16 bit era is hit and miss for me. 8 bit less so but I feel like there are only 50-75 worthwhile NES games and everything prior to that less. I will try anything and I have a 2600 which I am glad to have but rarely do I play it for over 15 minutes

I collect and play everything 2nd generation onwards. Meaning I won't collect single-game "pong" type consoles, but everything with interchangeable carts I'm down for. Closing in on a complete collection too, only missing a handful of late 70's/early 80's machines (Channel F, Arcadia, Astrocade) and a couple imports (only recently decided to include them in my collection)

I have a huge collection of physical games and have recently begun rabidly snatching up good quality flash carts everywhere I can. I want to be able to play anything, on any system.

That being said -- I do think there's something to be said for nostalgia with a lot of retro systems. I grew up with Colecovision (from my older brother), NES, and SNES. Plus a little Genesis from the kid across the street. Didn't get another system until college when I bought a PS1, then a PS2, then the collecting bug bit me. Whenever I want to go back to something, it's usually the NES, SNES, or PS2. Typically in that order. I play a lot of games, check out "Top 10" lists for every system I pick up, etc etc, but often it's short bursts. If you didn't have it as a kid, I don't think you're going to be as into it. I never played LttP or OoT as a kid, I think Zelda 1 is the best Zelda game and nothing will change that. Never played Mario64 as a kid, so I don't have that same nostalgia for it.

But I like the collecting as well as the playing, so I keep buying

The third generation's as far back as I reach. I love my NES and Famicom but I have no interest in anything older than those. The games don't entertain me, possibly because I have no nostalgic attachment to them. I feel like it's too late for me to go back now to any systems earlier.

Not strictly speaking.

I can't play games of the second generation (Atari 2600 and such) for multiple reasons. One of them, yes, being graphics. My limit is when everything looks like indistinguishable blocks.

But for the third generation, or the 8-bit era if you prefer, of NES and Master System I'm kind of torn. I don't mind the graphical quality of those games, but by and large the gameplay and (Even more so) the story of games back then just seems too simplistic and barebones for me. Now I don't claim to think every game from that generation is like this, but almost all of the ones I've seen are.

And even then, there are exceptions. The original Final Fantasy for example. But the exceptions are very few and far between.

In the realm of console games, I don't have too much interest on anything pre-NES except for a select few. Games like Combat! For the Atari and Adventure keep me interested because those have nostalgic value.

In the realm of PC it is no holds barred. Give me the old school adventure games, the text based adventure games, karateka etc. I will play the crap out of those games forever.

I have no interest in pre-Atari stuff, but I do love my 2600. Unlike some people here, I could pull out a stack of games and play for hours. It helps that the 2600 has some excellent translations of classic arcade games like Berserk, Frogger, Space Invaders, Dig Dug, Missle Command and Venture. The original games are pretty good too like Pitfall, Kaboom, Adventure, Haunted House and Enduro. Have you played Atari today?

It's hard for me to jump into anything around the Atari Age. It's probably sad as I'm sure there's some great titles for it, but it just doesn't interest me. Sega Master System and NES is about as far back as I can go.

On the flipside, if it's arcade titles I'll at least give them a try. There's something novel and interesting about playing an older arcade machine, like a vector machine or something that was unique to the arcades.

i don't have a "cut-off" either. i grew up first playing a NES in the mid 80s....and (now) i can still go all the way back to the Atari 2600 and still enjoy it the same. my parents think i used to belong in the old generation since i enjoy a lot of the old entertainments (movies, music, books..) i used to rock to the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc music when i was a teen. i guess playing and listening to them takes me back of how things used to be.
