I'm wondering if anyone else is like me when it comes to this.
I pretty much can go as far back as NES and Sega Master System and still enjoy a good portion of their game libraries.
However when I start to get into systems made before that like the Atari 2600 or Intellivision I find very little games that can actually entertain me for more than a few minutes at a time. I figure it's one those things that you just had to be there when it was new to enjoy it. Dig-Dug and Missile Command stick out as a couple I really enjoy, but even those games I can only play for so long. It just doesn't hold my attention or entertain me as much. I also much prefer a d-pad (or a thumbstick) to a joystick, especially the ones on Atari systems, Colecovision, and Intellivision. Intellivision and Colecovision's are just uncomfortable, unintuitive, and just plain suck. And while Atari 2600's isn't as bad, the actual joystick is quite stiff, but thankfully the Sega Genesis controller is compatible with Atari 2600.
I do own an Atari 2600 and a handful of games (as well as a Pong-clone), however, because I'm into the history of gaming and I like to see where gaming came from.
Is there a similar cut-off point for you? What is it?

Yea im the same as you man, i could only go back to NES and Sega Master... anything else before that just don't feel right. The games seems too simple like those free games that comes with old phones back then.

70s LCD and Atari 2600 games are hard for me to play. I'll always love arcade stuff, but my oldest console is a NES and it's not going to change soon.

I grew up on 2600 so I'll play pretty much anything. But, now a days I'm not really stoked to hook up the 2600 or play Colecovision really. NES/Master System is the oldest stuff I play regularly.

I love your posts as of late. Straight and too the point.dsheinem wrote:no
I have to agree. It just depends. See, I certainly couldn't play Missile Command or Berzerk for a long while. However, I love me some Defender 2 and Solaris. Could waste a whole afternoon on those, and both are 2600 games.
By the same token, there are plenty of PS1 games that I think have aged much worse than almost any 2600 game.
Largely it has to do with my love of 80s arcade games, and arcade style games in general. Repetition is fine for me. I love them.
Older. Not wiser.

I'm not interested in collecting pre-NES consoles, but I am comfortable in playing computer games from earlier times (I love owning an Apple II) or playing older arcade cabinets if I see them.
Something like the Atari 2600 just doesn't appeal to me though. I can't help but find the graphics too simplistic. I know I played it when I was a kid and fondly remember playing Pac-Man and Donkey Kong on it, but I'd rather play versions that are closer to the arcade.

Not really, I love hooking up the 2600 and trying to play Asteroids for as long as I can. I'll even play some text adventures.

NES and Genesis for me, as well. I'll play arcade games and my Vectrex that go back farther than that, but rarely for extended lengths of time. As far as console games, pretty much never.
Computer games, on the other hand, I'll go way back with. Not sure why (maybe because I grew up playing PC games that were already really old, haha).

I like NES games, but anything before that is too old and if i was given a Atari 2600, i would sell it, or anything older, sold, i have no interest in anything before the NES i dont care how revolutionary it was.
