The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.

I've submitted and deleted two different posts in this topic already...

I'm just not sure what to say about this...

Is it me or is it more difficult today to respect most of the ultra-popular games?

When I was younger, i hated Zelda games (still do) but at least I respected them and knew they were well-made.

There's obviously a lot of people who think Halo is great, but there is also a huge number of people who think it is awful.

What games from the early 90s had this kind of reception? Almost all the popular games I remember were generally considered to be great games as well by the majority of gamers.

I think we were more united back then. Even while we were at each other's throats in Sega vs. Nintendo, there was more common ground than today.

I agree with you. I think it's the influx of less traditional gamers. The 'casual' gamer. The 'jock/frat boy' gamer.

Then again, everything is more divisive today. Politics, religion...

I think in Halo's case, there is a large contingent of PC gamers who honestly feel that aside from being pretty, it's a pretty generic shooter. If it had launched on the PC first it would not have received the kind of reception that it did on the Xbox. And it really contributed to the multi-platforming of FPS's, which has ruined such games as Deus Ex: Invisible war and Oblivion (though technically not an FPS, similar rules apply).

So this group of PC shooter fans really dislikes what Halo has done to shape the direction of their portion of the industry.

I'm (still) mainly a PC gamer, and I can say something about the first Halo (which I never owned, only played at different friends houses) - it is a fun game. I can't comment much on Halo 2 or on Halo 3 as I haven't played them. Halo is probably worse than Half-Life, for example (haven't played HL2 yet), but it is a good game and it is fun. It works very well as a console FPS, which is what it is! The recharging shield I think plays very well into not having quicksaves like you frequently do on the PC side. I think if people tried the games without prejudice they might like them for what they are.

I think some people dislike Halo and that is ok. I don't understand why some people diss it the way they do, however. Yes, there probably are better games, but why care so much that others like the game a lot? Than goodness we aren't all alike. Yes, it is a shame when great games are so obscure and the devs need to close down as they didn't sell, but this isn't really the fault of high profile titles (regardless of the variable quality of high profile titles, particularly licensed games).

On the other hand, being a big fan of TES series (and again, not having yet played Oblivion) I was a bit disapointed with the obvious "consolizing". But I hear it is still a good game.

Oblivion didn't suffer as bad as some, especially since the more obvious signs can be modded away. But DX: Invisible War was a trainwreck due to being developed for the Xbox first; extremely short levels, completely removing the inventory and skill system from the original (which was half of what made it fun), and the universal ammo system (Worst. Idea. Ever.)

Yeah, and DX: Invisible War was one of the few Xbox titles I actually took the time to beat. I liked it, but it definitely could have been better.

Then again, maybe the reason I liked it so much was because I'd just had my wisdom teeth removed and it was there...and I was on painkillers.

The only reason I was able to beat Invisible War the first time was because they still had a good story. The conspiracy stuff, while not quite as good as the original, were still good enough to keep me going. But I haven't been able to play it since, because the gameplay falls so far short of the original.
