Re: What PS3 games need to be looked at?
Yeah, I could throw in some more if we go multi plat. I think the already mentioned Batman games are absolute must plays. They're the new standard for comic book video games and have my favorite beat 'em up style combat system of this generation of games, with Sleeping Dog's system being a very close second place.
Speaking of which, Sleeping Dogs! A great homage to Hong Kong movies and a nice twist on the GTA formula. The melee combat really stands out. Batman Arkham City and Sleeping Dogs have my favorite melee combat systems this gen.
The Darkness has some of the best storytelling I've seen in a video game.
The Lego games are some of the best platformers of this gen.
X-Men Origins Wolverine - God of War style combat that I actually enjoyed more than the GOW games. Wolverine is just more fun than Kratos, and I love the awesome environment kills
Stranglehold is an underrated title that beats the Max Payne series at its own game with far more interesting shooter combat options, and interactive, destructible environments.
Sonic Generations - Re-invigorated Sonic and made him relevant.
The Tomb Raider games. We saw Lara come back in a big way this gen, and even re-invent herself with the excellent Guardian of Light
Prince of Persia(2008) - It wasn't the game everyone wanted, but they did some awesome stuff with combat and the Elika system was very cool. I guess the Assassins Creed series has taken the torch from the POP series though, but I've never gotten into the AC games
Marvel Ultimate Alliance series - Just great, arcade style, action rpgs with some beat 'em up elements and Gauntlet influences thrown in. They're the ultimate games for hardcore, Marvel fans.
Castle Crashers - It's really a 360 game in my eyes, but if we're going multi-plat with this thread it's worth mentioning. CC and Dishwasher Vampire Smile are my favorite 2D beat 'em ups this gen.

MGS4 and demon's souls were great. maybe uncharted and bayonetta? I didn't love them but I know alot of people that did. There are a few more I think will be worthy of a mention but I haven't played them yet.

It was what I wanted that's for sure. I'm sad it seems that they won't be making a sequel to this game.Gamerforlife wrote:Prince of Persia(2008) - It wasn't the game everyone wanted, but they did some awesome stuff with combat and the Elika system was very cool. I enjoyed the game, but I could kind of see where detractors were coming from too. They felt the characters weren't as strong as previous games and the platforming was too easy. I really thought that the game was kind of forward thinking in how it used Elika, but people got too hung up on the no game over screen thing. It's not like it actually made the game any easier. You still had to redo any platform sequence you failedStark wrote:It was what I wanted that's for sure. What I didn't like was the on rail segments. I also disliked how later in the game enemies could just break your combos, essentially making the whole idea of a "combo" pointless. It's a shame too, because they had a very cool combat system there with the ring outs(fun to do on a boss) and the way the Prince and Elika were both incorporated into combos. I thought the graphics were gorgeous too
I think it's a worthwhile game over all, worts and all, and I think it's sad how POP has sort of fallen by the wayside in favor of Assassins Creed, which for some reason is just less appealing to me

I really, really like El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. The mind-bending visuals seamlessly blend the hack/slash combat with both the 3d, and 2d platforming. Some say the game doesn't have much depth. I disagree with those people.

So, I finally beat Infamous from the free Sony download (after the PSN crash). I think it should be added to the games that should be looked at list. I think it's sort of a hidden gem. I'm not sure it sold all that well, but it definitely is a top tier PS3 game.

But at least the xbox is the king of shmups and on that note I'll add that the ps3 is the only way for us americans to play Under Defeat HD.Gamerforlife wrote:Yeah, I like how Sony keeps supporting Japanese stuff. Sure, you can find some of that stuff on the 360, but for the most part the Xbox is not a home for fans of Japanese games.AppleQueso wrote:360 had a handful of exclusive JRPGs early on. Lost Odyssey and all that, but most of them eventually made it over to PS3 anyway.
Definitely glad I went with a Ps3 over a 360 though.

Assuming its region-free like almost all ps3 games, we will also be able to import Ketsui, one of the few region-locked 360 shmups, once it comes out.
I just picked up a ps3 yesterday, and this thread has been extreamly helpful in picking a start-up library.

Without pointing out the obvious big hitters like Uncharted, God of War, and MGS4 I would would recommend these as great PS3 exclusives.
