I think I'll drop a post here instead of the film snob/comic rage thread that the movie thread is at the moment... I asked for some zombie movie recommendations, but I think more specifically I'm looking for more serious takes on the genre? Something akin to this show, preferably from the 80s golden age, but not restricted to. You know, something along the lines of Dawn of the Dead, both the classic and the remake.

The Oscars is just people in a certain line of business giving awards to their peers. Something that happens in offices across the country thousands of times a year. It just so happens that there's enough interest in their business to broadcast it on tv, and they usually find someone entertaining to make jokes along the way. I don't think it's ever been about deceiving the sheepish masses. In most years the awards tend to go to artsy dramas or movies that don't typically bring in a lot of viewers. In recent years the movies have been more appreciated by general audiences though, like argo and lincoln.

Well that was a breath of fresh air.

The story was a bit telegraphed, but it was a solid episode nonetheless.

And in less than a minute, Michonne shows off her mad ninja skills and her horrid taste in sculpture. I guess she wants something to brighten up her concrete cell

That episode was fantastic. Best one in a long time despite being more of a side story. Morgan's actor was great.

I really liked this episode

We pretty much got comic book Michonne in this episode. In the comics, Rick always has her by his side as his personal zombie killing machine and trusts her to watch out for Carl from time to time too. Her and Carl develop a nice relationship in the comics. What she told Rick about talking to her dead boyfriend is also a nod to the comics, which actually spent a lot more time focusing on that. This was sort of a shared secret between her and Rick in the comics, that they both had this little bit of craziness. Michonne lightened up a bit this episode, which is good. She's not always silent and angry looking in the comics. She's a serious character sure, but not to the extreme she's been on the show prior to this episode.

Really interesting what they did with Morgan this episode. It's faithful to the comics, but also takes things in a slightly different direction. In the comics, he's been killing survivors and feeding them to his zombie son. When Rick shows up, he finally kills his son and joins Rick's group. They didn't exactly go that route on the show, but I love the dialog from him. Great lines, and great acting too. I don't think the comic ever explained how his son got turned. I love the show having it be his own mom that did it.

I had mixed feelings on the backpack guy. Part of me was appalled by how cold they were to him, but then I realized that Rick has enough shit on his plate as it is with the governor. No time to be breaking in some new guy, and having to deal with everything that comes with that. Plus, the huge backpack is a pretty tail tell sign that the guy is totally clueless about how to survive in this new world. That shit's gonna weight you down and make you easy prey dumb ass. If Rick took him in he probably would have ended up being the "Ben" character. Those of you who have played The Walking Dead video games know what I'm talking about.

Spoilers (with no spoiler tags) and such ahead...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Team Carl.

After Carl said "You should quit" last episode (well, two episodes ago now) I knew he was going to try and split. When Michonne overheard Rick basically saying she was expendable, by way of Carl's questioning, that pretty much sealed it for me. Carl and Michonne would be better off without Rick.

And Carl's point blank shot? You had to see that coming. The story was completely telegraphed, but it worked very well. And although this is all a setup for Rick's leadership redemption, at least the story is once again doing what it does best; focusing on its characters.

if rick is in law enforcement, i'm surprised at how he is surprised they stumbled upon a prison so close to his home town.

In the comics, it is implied he doesn't kill his son. Kirkman shows the reaction to the shot, and then a broken chain.

Damn, that episode was really awesome. I love the episodes that focus on the characters exploring the dead apocalyptic world the series takes place in. So much perfectly creepy ambiance going on as they explore Morgan's insane stronghold. The episodes that focus outside of the safe zone are always the most enjoyable to me.

I don't think an impulsive child willing to get himself and others killed for sentimental nonsense is fit to be alone or in any position of independence. Carl is a pretty tough kid chiseled by the roughest of times, but he's still just a kid with poor judgement. If Michonne didn't go with him and he ventured off alone, he would have died.
