I've been sober for 6 years, 15 days. To each his own, but my chemistry does not allow me to responsibly indulge. General advice for anyone wondering if they're an addict: If you're asking the question, you probably have a problem.

That's a pretty good point, too. It's all about responsibility--some people simply don't have the willpower or body chemistry to indulge in things that may be a little harmful but are fun--alcohol, pot, fatty foods, whatever.

Great job staying sober, by the way.

anyone ever taken Ritalin for fun? Or those ephedra pills that gave kids heart attacks in P.E. class?

There's probably theories out there like the old "Equal and opposite reaction," thing that may explain simply and basely why people do things- to counter something else. I'm really tired in the morning, so I drink some coffee. Everyday I'm tired, so I keep drinking coffee. When my heart is weakened by the stress of caffeine in 10-20 years I may wish I didn't have the coffee, but I was tired! It was my choice! It may have been prophesized that if someone gets tired they get coffee, but it is their action that determines the outcome...
even if they are fated to be screwed up, like their parents were heavily addicted to coffee or they started using uppers to combat their debilitating depression (as it was mentioned before- yes, depression is a real mental illness but it is often misconstrued for "da blues.")

Answering the drug problem with words like "free choice" doesn't solve anything- we're missing the bigger picture of vast unhappiness and disappointment in the world. Damnit, marijuana isn't the problem! My father was a huge loser with alcohol, LSD, and marijuana- the alcohol made him angry, the LSD made him crazy, and the mary jane made him ditch all of his responsibilities. I've chosen not to use drugs like that because I know of his tendencies- yet I've been a big hit with ephedra, at least until they banned them from over-the-counter availability- which is to counter my depression and it's actually more positive than you'd think- I'd rather have the energy to keep going than take something to make me not care.

Arg, it's the people, not the drugs. We gotta make the people happy and fulfilled, one person at a time. Have lots of babies with love and peace! Make love not war! Flower Pow-*bang!*

Sorry i just have to quote this sentence, because i wonder if you do really believe that people take drugs for fun?
Cause in my opinion nobody ever takes drug for fun if you take the subconsciousness into account.

Your opinion is just that... yours.

You play videogames habitually although it takes time away from more important things. Somewhere in your subconscious is there something going wrong?

Just because a choice isn't 100% rational doesn't mean there is a problem causing you to make it. Sometimes you are just looking for recreation.

I won't lie, I don't smoke pot anymore on a regular basis. But on occasion, like every few months, I'll plop my butt down with a couple friends and smoke a bowl. FOR FUN. We veg out to some movies and video games for a few hours, shove potato chips down our throats, and joke about goofy stuff:

"can I gank a dew?"
"wha'?"
"can I gank a dew?"
"wha'?"
"can im dank some goo?"
"whaaa'?"
"man i drank cum too?"
"whaa'?"

yeah it's retarded, it's goofy, but it was all for FUN. I woke up the next day and went on with my life per usual, working, making income and not thinking about smoking pot.

You might be sitting there scratching your head and saying, "man that's pathetic, you guys thought that was funny?" Oh come on, you probably find something completely ridiculous funny as well. You're on a retro videogame site, don't tell me you don't have a few pleasures in this world other people think you're a complete reject for having!

Your habitual misguided conclussion that ALL illegal drug users are some cracked out dependent with "issues" has got to quit. It's offensive and ignorant. The exact TWO things you seem to want to call anyone who happens to toke the pipe on occasion for recreation! Don't get me wrong, I wish people weren't throwing their lives away on drug addictions, but that doesn't make all drug use an addiction. People get addicted to food, so if I enjoy a filet mignon stuffed with cheese sauce with a side of fried asparagus dipped in chocolate once a month does that make me a glutton!? Because I eat an unhealthy meal everyone once in a while I must have the most horrible diet on earth?

Wow, now that's a reaction. I didn't mean to offend you and as you have stated yourself "it is my opinion" after all.
The only point i was trying to make is that nobody takes drugs out of fun.

In my opinion every drug is taken out of dissatisfaction with what one has. Imagine you and your buddies sitting together without doing drugs and making silly jokes. Sure you would still be buddies and you would find a different thing to make jokes, laugh, discuss about or whatever. But, why do drugs have to be involved? Can't you be silly without them? The question one has to ask oneself is why you take drugs. And the "just for fun" statement does not fit into that notch.

I'll give you another example that many people like to throw in. Imagine you were going to a party with a girl or friends and you were having a lot of fun and all and then you do take drugs to make the enjoyment "even better". This has nothing to do with dissatisfaction one might think because "the night is great anyway"... well... why add something then? Why not accept the night and party "as it is"?

Drugs cost money and most of them harmfull in one or another way. Some of them can get you in jail. I don't count only illegal drugs either, to me nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, sugar and adrenaline are all the same. The only thing that counts in my opinion is to accept "why" you take drugs:
If you like to be silly with friends and can't do it the same way without pot, fine.
If you like to drink some beer in order to get talky to other women/guys, fine.
I don't say everyone has problems, i just say that drugs are not taken for "fun" they are "self-applied medication".

After all the english word drug does not only referr to "illegal drugs" it means medication. So treat it as that and also keep in mind "at what costs" you do them. This is very important, because one has to "know" for what price one is silly, or a headache goes away, or one gets cured from this or that disease. One has to evaluate for oneself how much a drug is worth for oneself and what "other" possibilities there are to get what one "needs".

As i stated i didn't mean to offend you and i never said you (or anyone else taking drugs) were cracked out or had issues or anything.

Because someone tries to enhance a situation, or partake in recreation makes the "doing it for fun" inapplicable?

If you were out at a picnic having a real good time. You and a lady just kicking it good enjoying music and hotdogs. And then someone came over and said, "Hey why don't we pull out the jet ski and whip a few in the canal." Why do that? You're already having fun! Jet skis are expensive and fuel is expensive. You can fall off the jet ski and get really hurt.

Or you had a long day and you came home that night and your buddy asks you to sit around and veg out in front of some videogames and watching movies. Acting silly and goofy the whole time. And then someone tosses you a beer. Why, you don't need a beer to have fun.

Uhmmm... because the jet ski and a beer at the end of a long day is fun! Why have a dinner party with music when it could be just as fun with out music? Why do anything!? There are tons of reasons why, fun is one of those possible reasons.

People drink to have fun, people smoke for pleasure, people make huge unhealthy meals because they enjoy them, people jump off cliffs because it's exhilirating, people go out to the race track on family funday and race their street car at 150+ MPH.

It's fun.

Or should we live in padded cells the rest of our lives not taking any risks out of preservation for our own health? Where's the fun in that?

[edit]
And just because I'm here responding doesn't mean I'm enraged or offended. I've merely taken an interest in the topic and trying to display a different side of the topic.

As I've explained, I am not an avid drug user. I smoke a bowl once in a blue moon... if that. Other then that, ha, I don't even take aspirin out of a personal choice that most drugs are a crock of shit. But my personal choice and opinion has no influence on a generalized explanation for why people make their decisions.

Because I've seen a black guy steal a TV doesn't mean all black men steal TVs. Just because I've seen a dope head perform felatio for some H doesn't mean ALL drug users are pathetic whores (a week later I discovered the woman was my new friends mom).

I'm merely here as contrast, and it's entertaining for me. And if I do get that offended... you'll know. Mostly because I won't entertain myself speaking with you anymore.

No it means the that person is not satisfied with the situation the fun he/she has without "drugs".

In that case i would definitely stay with my girl, but anyway. The jet ski is an alternate way to talk about adrenaline, a drug your body produces. It's not harmfull by itself (in the doses our body produces) but there is a risk of having an accident, and to be honest i wouldn't want to bring myself into that situation when i got a women i like by my side.

It all depends on the dose and what you use it for. Alcohol is not harmfull in small doses and i wouldn't wanna get drunk right there. I'm not much of a drinker either. But let me ask you this, have you ever noticed your friends getting more emotional and becoming able to talk about stuff they wouldn't otherwise? Alcohol helps them in their need to be able to talk about emotions.

lordofduct wrote:Uhmmm... because the jet ski and a beer at the end of a long day is fun! Why have a dinner party with music when it could be just as fun with out music? Why do anything!? There are tons of reasons why, fun is one of those possible reasons.

About the music:
I once heard a story in the radio about an (american) indian who had left the reservoir he had lived in to see the big city. He was invited somehow to live with a family from the city for a while. He was then interviewed after he came back to the reservoir and he asked the interviewer a very interesting question:"why does the modern men listen to music all the time? can't he put up with himself?"
Music is a drug too, and in our society it is being abused heavily while for example in an indian tribe music is a ritual and it's being used for specific events. In cities you can hear music in shopping malls, elevators, clubs, restaurants, bars, on the streets, in cars, everywhere (with earphones).

lordofduct wrote:People drink to have fun, people smoke for pleasure, people make huge unhealthy meals because they enjoy them, people jump off cliffs because it's exhilirating, people go out to the race track on family funday and race their street car at 150+ MPH.

It's fun.

There is no sole definition for fun because it's a stimulation of your brain that you need. Food stimulates you differently than for example racing a car. The word fun itself tells nothing. There are people who get a kick out of torturing people or animals. To them it's fun. But in the end it's the "need" for something. So the "fun" is not the point. It's the "drug" that we need, or to be more precise, the effect of the drug.

lordofduct wrote:Or should we live in padded cells the rest of our lives not taking any risks out of preservation for our own health? Where's the fun in that?

Who said that? Of course not. Do whatever you want to, but know "why you do it" and "for what price". Fun is just a word for a million things, but the word itself tells you nothing about the reason you actually do it.

That's a pretty fallacious argument you've got there. By that logic, everyone should be totally cool with standing perfectly still all the time, because if they do anything else it's because they're not satisfied with their life. It's an EXTRAORDINARILY presumptuous mindset to take. Wow.
