That Emerson set has become intolerable. I used some of my birthday money to buy a new TV! I'm grateful to all my relatives for sending cash in the mail, especially since what my parents gave me was this:
Can't complain, actually.
I got a skinny Vizio TV for $178 and carried it home in the rain. It...wasn't supposed to rain. It felt pretty sturdy when I unpacked it, despite its thinness. Can't weigh more than 5 pounds. This is a 23-inch screen about the same height as my last one.
It has HDMI, Component, Composite, VGA and RF inputs. No S-video, but nothing seems to have that anymore. Claims 720p, but it's 1360x768. 720p video is 1280x720, so even HD video won't be displayed at native resolution. Bizarre?
Here's my new setup:
I decided to put the 5th-gen consoles somewhere else, since I can emulate Dreamcast and everything earlier than that. That's the best option, considering the extra features and the VGA connection. My laptop sits in that empty space. Here are the pictures of it in action!
F-Zero GX - Gamecube - RF
I know, I know, but I'm not getting the component cables. No big deal, since I have a Wii in the other room and rarely play these games. It'll a big deal when I get around to Fire Emblem. Composite isn't any better. It deals with artifacts better than I expected and there's no delay at all.
La Pucelle Tactics - PS2 - Component - 240p
2D games look fantastic. The TV supports 240p over component, if you cared.
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus - PS2 - 480p
I'm not even going to say anything
Fatal Frame 2 - PS2
Possibly the best-looking PS2 game, but it was too dark for my camera.
Ace Combat 5 - PS2
Another candidate for prettiest PS2 game. You have to adjust the screen position for each widescreen game - they're all slightly different. Why can't it auto-adjust like my LCD monitor from 2001?
Outrun 2006 - PS2 - 480p
Looking awesome.
My desktop. Forgive the glare.
Like I said, I'm running most Dreamcast games and everything earlier on PC. Here's Soul Calibur, looking way better than it ever did on Dreamcast.
Starfox 64 in widescreen
Super Metroid intro. SNES games look awesome.
Although my PC is really weak, I look forward to games like these.
Despite all that awesomeness, the real joy will be watching anime. This screen is the right size, the right distance away, and brilliantly colorful. If you watch in a dark room with the backlight off...serenity.
