Only physically so. Adapters are cheap, though.
You don't need an adapter. You can either cut the tabs at the cart slot or you can swap the back of a Japanese cart with an American one and not damage the system.

I think you can also use a Game Shark to play imports, but I have not tried it myself.

I like the cart swap approach too, use a cheap sports game backside. This prevents the two cart headache of an Import Adapter or Gameshark cart not booting.

@ brainerdrainer - Speaking of trying out SHMUPS, Thanks to Metal Jesus I just updated the Spinner Guide. Try an UltraRacer 64 controller on Asteroids 64 for instance, there are bound to be shooters that work very well with it.

Sadly, Aero Fighters Assault got turned from a shmup to an Ace Combat style game (or was it a rail shooter?).... N64 is not the shmups destination (but the Space Invaders "remake" was pretty fun)

I use my Game Shark to bypass anything like that. I'm sure others break tabs or whatever.

Would this work for playing US carts on a PAL system?

That I don't know. I'm sure there are some issues going from 60 Hz to 50 Hz... that's if the games boot.
