He wanted to retire, make bank, and become one of the world's biggest philanthropists.

In factSPECULATION, MAYBE the entire reason Lucas sold his company, by his own admission BASED ON SOME PREVIOUS COMMENTS HE MADE A YEAR BEFORE, is because he was tired of dealing with them
Not to be rude, but it sounds an awful lot like you're in denial. There's a reason Star Wars fans have a bad name and it'll arguably be worse now because they'll complain even louder than they did before every time Disney says anything about their plans. Quite honestly, it makes me embarrassed to admit publically that I like those movies.

I'm a Star Wars fan, I don't really give a shit what Star Wars fans think or say. I don't really give a shit what other people think of Star Wars fans.

I was merely wondering why you were suggesting that the sale was BECAUSE of the negative fans, when there's nothing in any interview clearly linking the two together (whereas there's lots of other reasons that have been given and that make sense).

Oh I see. Okay. The reason I make that link is because, despite his flip-flopping on whether he had plans for episode 7 and beyond, it's been more or less confirmed that Disney's new trilogy will be at least partly based on Lucas's story notes. If that's true and he's still going to be involved, then he'll be able to duck the complainers and say "hey, guys, don't look at me, I didn't do it this time". A couple years back, there were rumors Lucas was considering doing a new trilogy, so it makes sense to me that that might have been one of his motivations for selling. Ya know, to let someone else take the heat. I guess it's just me, but I thought that was kind of obvious. My mistake.

No mistake in having an opinion.

I'm a huge fan of the original trilogy, but I'm not on the hate Lucas bandwagon. I don't think he's the tyrant he's made out to be and I wouldn't be surprised if he attended half the shoots on the prequels.

Lucas was coaching a team, and like a coach he's going to get all the blame or all the glory while the other hundreds involved are barely mentioned.

As long as it makes sense, I'm down with it. I just don't want to have him crammed in for a whacky slapstick cameo.

I can't believe I'm about to type this, but...

A Han-Solo death would make sense.

Harrison Ford wanted it to happen in Jedi. So did Gary Kurtz iirc.
