So I am about half way through (based on the total number of missions in the game) and I am quite enjoying the game still. I've found some of the fights on the hardest available starting difficulty to give me that "fuck my fingers hurt" sensation that brings me back to the series again and again, the characters as they exist in the reboot are fairly well done and the story thus far is at least easy to understand (if a bit cliche). I miss some of the the more gothic settings, but there's a lot of imagination at work in this game, too. It is really hard not to think of it as a prequel/origin story instead of a reboot, since the main characters are younger and act very similarly.

In any case, this entry so far strikes me as stronger than DMC 2 and 4, but not quite up to snuff with DMC 1 or 3. That's not a bad place to be, though, and I suspect the last half will get more interesting and the combat will open up even more. Definitely not feeling any regrets with the purchase, and would recommend it to anyone on the fence.

I'm perplexed.

Is the combat at least deep and intricate? Because the old DMC games have like 140890842358 combo's compared to Enslaved's 2-3. Heavenly Sword looked stupidly bland too in terms of combat. So I never had much faith in Ninja Theory when it came to that... maybe they finally got it right though.

Not speaking from first hand experience here at all, but from all the stuff I've been reading, it's basically old DMC, only a bit more dumbed down and made a bit more accessible. Still fun though.

DMC2 is also still the worst.

I think DMC2 is slightly better than DMC4, but tbh it has been a looong time since I've played it.

I finished the reboot: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 98#p706798. The game is excellent, and does the series justice.

I'd probably go: DMC3>DMC1>DMC>DMC2>DMC4

I like the DMC series. The first and third were great, the second I never played, and the fourth lost my interest. However, on anything other than normal difficulty I usually have too hard a time with these games. I've always taken more to Ninja Gaiden's style of combat, where I've always been able to play those games successfully on the highest difficulty setting (Master Ninja). In the classic NG vs DMC debate I definitely fall into the NG camp, specifically the original Team Ninja games, even though I can easily point out lots of design flaws in Itagaki's games. NG combat just always feels more intuitive to me than DMC combat, and the action is much more violent and bloody, which also appeals to me. NG 2 on the 360 is like watching a bloody samurai movie. It's satisfying to finish a level and see the blood and body parts everywhere. It's Kill Bill's crazy 88 fight in gaming form

It's no surprise I'm a big fan of the Dishwasher Samurai games too. Those games are for all intents and purposes Ninja Gaiden in 2D.

I'll probably try this new DMC game though, but I'll probably just like it, and not love it. That's generally how I feel with DMC games.

It was a good game in some respects (its combat was ok, for one), but the whole thing felt rushed and unpolished, there was an inane amount of backtracking (half the game), and it really just isn't as good as any of the PS2 efforts. Have you played the others?

My only gripe is the half a game thing. If Dante's portion of the game was entirely unique I'd say it would be close to par with the PS2 games. I'd say the combat in 4 was much more than okay though, it was excellent. Definitely the highlight of the game and for me made it highly playable.

You didn't think the combat in DMC4 was a giant step back from DMC3?

You going to play the new one?

Giant step back, not really. More like toned down, especially while playing as Nero. There was still lots of depth and it was very high speed though. The stuff with devil trigger cancelling was nuts on the technical side of things and Dante still had a very sizable repertoire that could be put to good use in Bloody Palace. I'm not saying it's any DMC3 as that's the superior game in pretty much every way I can think of, but on the combat side of things I think it holds up quite well even if it's not up to snuff with 3. One thing in particular I can think of that 3 destroys it in is the weapon selection though, 4 didn't have a very alluring set of weapons.

Maybe.
