Why do you buy dvds?

I don't buy DVDs new unless I know its something I'm gonna watch a lot. Like you said, a classic is good to own... you don't get bored of them. I have a lot of movies like that, and watch them all the time with guests or when I'm in the mood.

As for the tossaways... won't buy them. EXCEPT!

My cousin and I watch a lot of movies (he lives with me). We own a shit ton of them... the thing is we aren't these movie buffs running out and having to see a movie the day it is released. I'm more then willing to wait for it to leave the theatres, and then continue waiting for the DVD price to drop considerably.

Where it comes down to is this. We walk into a Blockbuster, they have stacks of "used" movies at the front now. And a good stack of them cost less then the cost of a rental. You can buy 4 for 10 bucks and the sort. We go through and find something that looks interesting and buy the 4 or 5 movies. We are set for the next week of movie watching, don't have to return the movie, and that used disc gets a home instead of going to the garbage heap. All is well in Dylan's home.

Now so might say, "but those movies are old and suck." That's just a matter of opinion. As earlier threads may disclose, my idea of an enjoyable film is FAR FAR FAR different from most everyone elses. For instance, I watched Lion King and Indiana Jones ONCE, that was enough... don't want to again.

I think the last DVD I bought was Star Wars Episode 3. I don't think I even watched it after I bought it.
I just rent from Netflix now.
Physical media is overrated unless you're collecting it or it has decent resale value.
Games are the media I collect and least at the price point I buy games at, the resale is pretty good.

I don't I tend to only rent. Unless its a movie I discover I like alot and want to watch half a dozen (or more) times then I don't bother. And even then I tend to buy them used or after they've become cheap.

Also I'll buy movies I can't find anywhere for rent or download (what other choice do I have?)

I only buy new movies at full price if it's something I know I'll love or something I'm really looking forward to seeing. Usually I buy movies at pawn shops or discount bins.

I don't watch garbage movies, and movies like Life of Brian are usually cheap because they don't sell like the latest 'blockbuster'.

So i see most agree that buying movies is a bad idea unless its something you want to watch many times over..

speaking of movies, don't you think that watching a movie again is a waste of time?
I mean there are a ton of good movies out there, they are making movies now for the last 100 years or so...

Does anyone think that watching the movie AGAIN is like wasting his life , instead of like watching another good movie? You can even invest that 1.5-2 hours in something else like playing a videogame or time with family or doing sports instead of repeating the experience.

In a world where movies, games, episodes, music, books, are in very high quality and high in numbers, where work and family would take most of your time, do you think you have enough time to watch a movie more than once, and is that a good idea?

I'd watch classical movies again, and children movies like aladdin, even more if i haven't seen it for the last 3-4 years....but for the most part, thats like living the same day twice, don't you say?

I used to buy dvd movies once in a while but I don't anymore, the ones I bought always were movies I already saw and enjoyed and found at low prices. Right now I wanna sell the few 10-15 I got left because I seriously have never rewatched most of them. Used to copy dvd movies and in a few years it grew to about 300 and space was an issue even though they were only discs. That's why I enjoy divx: fast download, nice quality and fit many in one dvd or hard drive. But I tend archive those as well and keep track of them, can't help it but it has grown out of proportion. Just keep 'em around if I wanna rewatch something and for my parents and friends.

Because of the ongoing changes in formats and the low resale value of a collection of that sort, it all seems pointless. Movies should be more available online to download at low prices just like mp3s and maybe not recent movies but say one year old movies and such. It could even be more profitable for studios, publishers or whatever. Don't even wanna know how vhs collectors feel now. What I would really like to get a hold off is a laser disc player and some movies for it.

I use Netflix for 50% of my television viewing.

I watch [adult swim] for a few hours every week, along with the occasional show I get into (Lost, Star Trek: TOS).

And I have a collection of approximately 300 DVDs or so (I have to check - I haven't actually counted in years) and 4 Blu-ray discs. All of these are being viewed less and less as time goes on. Since I have zero television channels (my hdtv doesn't have a receiver,), my time in front of the screen does not involve channel surfing (which is the definition of wasting your life). I like that everything I watch is a deliberate form of entertainment, much like my video games.

I buy mostly just top tier movies that warrant a second or third viewing. There are a few things, like Cowboy Bebop, Seven Samurai, Blade Runner, A Very Long Engagement, etc that warrant repeated viewings throughout my lifetime, but I usually only watch a movie in my collection 2 or 3 times.

The only series of DVDs that I truly "collect" are the Dragon Dynasty series - because kung fu flicks never get old. Ever. 8)
