Why do you buy dvds?
Why do you buy dvds?
Really, I was wondering, why would any one want to buy a dvd of a movie?
Dvd's are expensive, they are like $30 new, and the movie only last 1:30 hours.
I can understand those who would buy an all time classics like indian jones , or old
james bond movies.
I can also understand buying children or family movies that you can't get bored of them , seriously many people can watch lion king, aladdin , charlie and the chocolate factory a gazillion times and it would still be fun...
but I will NEVER be like, "its boring, lets go buy a movie to watch"
whats wrong with renting? How many times would you want to watch movies like
saw, ghost rider, or anything else.

I am with you. I am mad at myself for buying certain DVD's whenever www.deepdiscountdvd.com had their bi-annual sale.
I do have certain favorites that I can watch 10 times a year (Boyz N Da Hood, Bloodsport, T2) but for the most part buying DVD's is pointless.

I used to enjoy collecting great movies on DVD. With new media formats, double dipping and other nonsense, it's like there's always another, better version of your movie to buy. So lately, I just don't even bother with movie collecting. If I want to watch something, I rent it or download it but I've sort of giving up on the movie collecting thing. I usually only buy stuff now if I know it to be something that isn't likely to get more than release. Like a cult hit or something

I buy dvd's because i like movies.
$30 is very expensive for a movie. I usually buy them $5-$15 $20 if its a must-have.
$60 for a 25 episode season of a tv show (ie: anime) if its more expensive than that (and let me assure you they try to milk it much further) i don't bother.

Re: Why do you buy dvds?
I buy DVDs when they are cheap ($5-10) and are sometihng I'll watch more than once, TV shows I'll pay up to $30, mostly to watch a series in order and re-watch favorite episodes
Re: Why do you buy dvds?
DVD's are expensive? Maybe when they are first released, but no more than two months later they shoot down to less than half that price without fail (unless they're unusual genres like international films, anime etc. In America in particular I've noticed they charge way too much for the DVDs of it). I personally but films on DVD if I know I'll want to see them time and time again, and of course the extras are nice to have if it's a film I really love and would like to know more of.
DVDs are far, far cheaper than VHS ever was. I don't see a big deal when most of them drop to next to nothing like they do now. A big lump of my movies on DVD cost around £1-3.

$30? Most of my Blu-rays weren't even that much. I have a lot of DVDs and I rewatch most of them. I Netflix ones I don't really need to own. I don't really get bored and buy whatever new release just came out, I watch a great movie I already own. Some people think it's crazy to have multiple unwatched DVDs, but I rather enjoy having a selection to choose from when I'm ready to watch something.

Re: Why do you buy dvds?
I buy a few TV series on DVD (mostly comedies like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development), primarily b/c I don't have TV so it's my way of watching the very, very few shows that are actually any good. Other than that I don't buy DVDs. On a related note, anyone else here not "have" TV? People always look at my like I'm an alien when they ask "did you see _____ on TV?" and I respond that "No, I don't have TV."
I watch a movie once and that's usually it. If it's good enough to justify my seeing it, I'll usually do it in the theater and then just be satisfied with having seen it that one time.
Of course I wasn't always this way. As a teen I would go to the same movie several times. I guess I just don't have the patience nor the time. Plus I prefer to consume my fiction in the form of novels now.

Re: Why do you buy dvds?
I buy DVDs only of my favorite movies and for TV shows. For my favorite movies I buy the DVDs mainly to do my part in making sure that there's a sequel. If no one buys the Iron Man DVD, there probably won't be a sequel (or in that case, another sequel). I see it kind of like voting, if you don't buy the movie, don't bitch that there isn't a sequel.

I buy movies so I can watch them whenever I want legally.
