Re: Consistency in Collecting
PC almost always. I'll go with a console if it's cheaper though.
Older. Not wiser.
Re: Consistency in Collecting
Collecting: I'll pick up stuff that I used to own as a kid. Mainly Sega stuff.
Current Gen: Lately, it's been picking up the gems for the Wii. Most of the multiplat stuff, I'll opt for the Xbox 360. Most recent pickups being Sonic & Sega Racing/Transformed, Genesis Collection, Vanquish, Binary Domain, etc. However, I've been collecting the Yakuza series, which is PS3 exclusive. But damn, the PSN store gives great discounts on their arcade stuff, and with better selection than Xbox.
I don't think its any secret that I am a Sega groupie. I see them providing quality titles that play just as good, if not, better than the AAA titles of the same genre. Plus, their pricepoints as of late are incredibly reasonable--$40 as opposed to $60 at full retail.

Re: Consistency in Collecting
Hmmm now this could get complex and be another discussion in itself (though kind of similar to the Genesis vs Sega CD thread we've had going). I think back then, as compared to now, the differences between ports are a bit more apparent. Music is almost entirely different comparing both SNES and Genesis versions, some ports like Thunder Spirits (SNES) are practically a different game than Thunder Force III (Genesis), and then there's the Genesis controller which lacks half the buttons, so I definitely remember more complex games like Lost Vikings or Flashback being easier to handle on the SNES. Can't forget how some fighters had complicated pause combo's or something, haha.BoneSnapDeez wrote:If we're looking at SNES vs. Genesis, I always get the SNES version. Unless the game is so cheap I can afford both (ie: NBA Jam).
So yeah I think that's a tough one and almost every port could be dissected. And in a case of preferring JRPG's on the SNES or something, Square / Enix barely even bothered with the Genesis (if at all?) so that wasn't an option... and back then, both systems offered FAR more console exclusives than we get nowadays.
So I don't know where I'm getting with this one, but yeah I think you could get a lot more in depth with multiplatform comparisons of the old than nowadays, where it just boils down to which may run better technically and controller preference. But back then there could be a lot more factors. It'd be hard for me to pinpoint any consistency there, since (like brought up in that Sega thread) I prefer EWJ1 on the Genesis, but EWJ2 on the SNES, and sometimes I just favor the Genesis' gritty sound and sharper colors, or the SNES's cleaner stuff. So who knows how I'd break that down for myself.
Re: Consistency in Collecting
It really depends for me personally. I rarely buy the same game if I already have a port on some system already. The execption that I have to this is Megaman X Collection. I have it on the gamecube but due to the advent of technology (i.e. a new tv that cannot display the 240p resolution). I went and also got it for the PS2.
I also helps that my wife does not like video games. So multiple copies of the same game to her is a waste of moolah.

Re: Consistency in Collecting
I want to own big box copies of a bunch of PC games I already own (compliation disc, cheap DVD re-release, jewel case only, console port). It's driving me nuts. It would be so cheap and easy to find a DVD copy of Thief 1/2 for a few euros.
I've mentioned this before but I try to remain cartridge only for the most part with console and (non PSP) handheld collecting but I've got some 7800, Intellivision, SNES, 32X etc games so cheap CIB that I just had to buy a boxed version and that is also driving me insane. I dont know what to think of having PAL and NTSC games mixed in some of my collections (3DO, SNES, PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast etc) when the game boxes are different sized in Japan, USA and Europe.
I have platinum versions of a bunch of PS1 and PS2 games and I just try to keep the voices in my head quiet that tell me to sell those games and track down regular copies instead. I have Platinum copies of Jak and Daxter: Precursor Legacy and Jak III but my Jak X and Jak 2 are regular ones. But the disc on Jak III doesn't work so I also have a platinum Jak III that works

My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Re: Consistency in Collecting
I know that feeling bro. There's something about that Red Label that makes me feel so mainstream. I have a few copies of games that I owned the original black label for the game, but then I needed a replacement copy. Same with cartridge based games. If it had a case, I want it. I don't need cardboard boxes though, so N64, GBA, or any cardboard packaging, throw it out!Menegrothx wrote: I have platinum versions of a bunch of PS1 and PS2 games and I just try to keep the voices in my head quiet that tell me to sell those games and track down regular copies instead. Seriously, why throw it out when you can sell it to someone who wants it?

Yeah, throwing out cardboard boxes seems like a pretty bad idea, considering sometimes that cardboard is worth more than the cart itself.
