I always found a buffed out Fortitude was enough to deal with bullets until I could run up and sword them.

What about something like Magic Carpet? Its a 6dof shooter/z axis shooter but one of the more interesting FPS games out there.

If you want a solid storyline with few people playing online multiplayer still, give Outlaws a go:

A FPS by LucasArts that got praised by John Romero. How come I've never heard of it before?!

If a Blade Runner-esque cyber punk future isn't too much like space marines for you, then I recommend Hard Reset. I'm playing through it now. It's fast like Doom and hard as hell, though some have complained it's too linear. It's true there isn't a lot of maze exploration in the game, but there's enough to make it feel like more than a corridor, and many of the shoot-outs are in big open spaces with lots of room to run, dodge, and blow up incendiary items. Occassionally it's so difficult that it's almost led me to rage quit, but once I get to the next checkpoint and get in a flow, I'm always glad I didn't. It really is a fun, high speed FPS. Oh, and the graphics are fantastic.

Fantastic game!

Played some more Call of Duty 2 (GameCube), and one of the levels you were in various gunner/bomber positions of a B-24 Liberator. Pretty neat.
