FPS games with intresting levels

Post by Menegrothx »

Unlike platformers, fighters and other genres, FPS games, espescially modern ones, tend to have boring scifi/WW2/"modern warfare" themed levels and look. Can you think of any FPS games with creative and intresting levels/theme?
I was reading about Daikatana and it looks really intresting in this regard. I know it's a horrible game.
Daikatana is composed of twenty-four levels divided into four episodes. The number of maps per level varies, but is generally about three. Each episode represents a different location and time period: futuristic Japan, ancient Greece, the Dark Ages in Norway and near-future San Francisco. Gameplay tends towards fast-paced combat, although an attempt at introducing problem-solving elements was also included.
Games that I can think of that fit the bill
Unreal Tournament
Hexen+Heretic
Bioshock
Team Fortress 2 has an intresting cartoony look but the levels themselves aren't very intresting

I've played some old, relatively unknown FPS games that were quite creative/unique looking like Killing Time, PO'ed and Escape from Monster Manor, but they were gameplay wise so bad that there's no point listing them.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Duke Nukem 3D was set in "modern day" levels, like downtown Los Angeles.

It's a third person shooter (it has a first person mode though), but Kid Icarus Uprising has amazing level design.

The No One Lives Forever series had a definite 60s spy vibe that not a lot of other games have tried to do.

I don't recall any particularly special environments outside of things like a few of the lairs, though you do have some vehicle/chase sequences. Notably one where you're on the back of a tricyle shooting mimes (here). Also the fight where you're in a house getting torn apart by a tornado (part of this).

Darkest of Days has the interesting Civil War levels. The game is just kind of mediocre though.

While I also find less popular themes (1960s, WW1 and so on) intresting, I'd rather focus on games&levels set in time perioids you normally don't associate with firearms (like the "ancient Greece" and "Dark Ages in Norway" levels of Daikatana, the Medieval theme in Heretic and so on) and on those really otherwordly and trippy (scifi) levels like Xen in Half Life 1, Unreal Tournament and this thing

That "Tornado in trailer park" level of No One Lives Forever looks pretty fun though :)

I guess "modern warfare theme" has been synonymous with the deserts of the Middle East for the past 10-11 years, but I include all current day/near future-scenarios in that category.

Hmm, Turok series? Timesplitters? Powerslave perhaps. Serious Sam games also tend to set things in old style architecture (pyramids, etc).

If you're counting Unreal and such, then perhaps Quake 1 and 3. Definitely darker in tone, but not too far removed.

I love the whole atmosphere of Blood.

The original Halo had some pretty awesome organic/tech mix levels. Very colourful and interesting (imo).

Quake on the Saturn has a very different art style that I absolutely love. More so than the original art in fact, which is pretty strange.

Those are the three off the top of my head.

Bioshock Infinite looks awesome, but we don't know if it'll be as awesome as it looks yet.

I do like how there's a lot of grass and nature in many Halo levels. They're nice, but not quite what I'm looking for though

Good calls. How's Painkiller? It's supposed to be a lot like Serious Sam
