What Magazines Do You Read?

as far as gaming magazines , they are of no need ...
back in the 90's(pre-internet) , they were the best thing to happen to gamers,
Show coverage, previews of upcoming games, interviews, tutorials, cheats, communicating with other gamers by snail mail, screenshots and getting gaming reviews on which game to buy.

Now things are turned around.
On the websites you get the articles YOU want, not limited to their selection, old games, retro, new, you call it. Screenshots are old stuff, now its video demo and video review on the game you want. Communicating with others is fast with replies in hours if not minutes. So things are a lot quicker and based on your selection. back then you had to wait a whole month to get a look at other games, now its almost live coverage of everything and every game. Add to all that, its at unbeatable price...FREE!
For demos, you can chose the one you want and download right away.
But i do agree it was more fun back then, things had more value to it.

As for other magazines, I can't tell you how much I like published stuff, its weird but i do love magazines, something excites me about them. Yet if you keep a close eye, you will notice that many just repeat over and over for main feature on the cover, for example:
* .net, will always have the next big tool to create your website
* home business, will always have "100 business to start at home" or "how to get rich quickly"
* Time will always discuss an issue but in the end, you don't really get a point out of it, just information on the topics, no resolution, I guess same with businessweek

Keep an eye, look at back issues and you will notice this is true on most magazines. They tend to publish what attracts attention, this is why I like recketboy. Its not a magazine, but it only publishes quality useful stuff, not the "NEXT BIG THING" or publishes something with no real content value.

btw, I always wondered what WIRED is about. It seems to be about technology but their articles are so different and varied its hard for me to see what exactly they look for to publish. In PC world its easy, pc software & hardware..Forbes businesses and companies, yet WIRED its technology but very varied, what is it exactly about?

Yes, back then it was a must but its been about 8 years since I bought a game magazine or any magazine whatsoever. I had a lot of subcriptions and still keep some old ones in the closet.

But at the library, I read Time, Newsweek, New Republic, Z, Wired, Your Dog, Empire, Sci Fi.

I ocassionally grab Retro Gamer if I find there to be something of interest. Otherwise everything I read is based online. I do love the look of things in print and as someone that has done a little in print graphic design, I apreciate a good spread.

We need more e-mags in a magazine (.pdf?) format/

i read micro mart uk computer mag and sometimes official nintendo mag or Nrevolution but i mainly read online

Nothing. Print magazines are too outdated for the times. Sure, sometimes there might be a good article but that's rare too. Online has replaced printed media and I can't go back.

I have a paid subscription to psychology today and pc mag. i also have some random subscriptions that i got free online (there are a couple places that give away free mag subs) so, i also get good houskeeping, boating world, and some business magazine whos name escapes me. my ol lady likes the good houskeeping, i glance over the business one, but boating world usually hits the trash as soon as i get it. in the past i have also had free subs to radar, best life, and fhm.

Like racket, I've also let some subscriptions lapse in order to catch up on my backlog. I read EGM, Retro Gamer, Wired, the occasional Nintendo Power, etc.

About a year ago I got a subscription to Nintendo Power. Mostly, it was for the Zelda: Phantom Hourglass strategy guide that came free with the subscription. But I will also admit that there was the nostalgia factor involved in this decision.

Man, was I disappointed! It's not like it was in the old days. I used to pore over every word and every detail in the old magazine as a kid. But I always thought Nester was a bitch, and he looked like he needed a good ass-kickin'. (And this came from a kid who was usually on the receiving end of most ass-kickings.)

Not really, you can never trust the authenticity of online articles. Very few articles written online have been externally moderated. Even Wikipedia can't be trusted, granted it's moderated a lot more than most sites, but it's still edited by average Joe. Things like journals (for any academic subject) are always gonna be preferred in print form for the educated folk who want a little integrity.

For purely entertainment purposes magazines are still useful. There a lot more portable and ergonomic, besides I'm not exactly going to take my computer to the toilet with me…
