What Magazines Do You Read?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

What Magazines Do You Read?

Post by racketboy »

Which mags do you read on a regular basis and/or subscribe to.

I was subscribing to Wired, Fast Company, and INC, but I let those run out as I need to catch up on reading the ones that have been piling up.

I just recently subscribed to Maximum PC (was a multi-year subscriber a while back) now that I'm planning on rebuilding my desktop within the next year.

And of course, I also read through my library of old gaming mags (and some vintage Wireds as well).

I don't really read modern gaming mags anymore other than flipping through them at Barnes & Noble or something...

Now that I have both a Wii and DS I was thinking about subscribing to Nintendo Power. (gotta love fanboy mags) Anybody subscribe to it?

I only read EGM, mostly because I got the yearly subscription twice, I think gaming mags lost the "charm" they had in the early 90's.

Whatever I read is online. I don't really see a need for gaming mags anymore as they offer nothing I can't find online. I recently have become a fan of wired, but they seem to have tons of stuff on their website to read for free. Unless, the wired you're talking about is something completely different.

EDIT:I do keep all my old gaming mags though. Nice to take a trip back in time every now and then

I agree! I noticed that EGM is more than 50% ads now :( .

When Chris Slate was with the magazine and Sushi-X had his own section it really felt like a magazine for gamers by gamers, Now it feels like a magazine for gamers by the advertisers!

That's the same Wired. And yes, you can read most of the stuff online, but I like having it in hardcopy as its more fun to browse and easier to read the long stuff. They also have cool covers sometimes that I like to collect. Wired was better back in the dotcom boom days, but it's still ok now -- just more mainstream.

It's fun to read old Wireds as since it had a lot of cutting-edge technology and futurist type stuff. Now a decade later you can look back on them knowing what was a fad and what was actually on the money.

Ironic how you mention that, I read an old gaming mag a few days ago. There was an article about the upcoming Dreamcast launch here in the West. The writer predicted lots of sales and he said something along the lines of, "Mark my words, Sega will become a household name again".

Sad to think of how things really turned out

I read OXM, EGM and Nintendo Power, to name a few. I used to read Game Players back in the day. I used to have an ASSLOAD of NextGen, but I threw them out cuz my mom said so. I still have all the PSM mags that I had since my subscription to NextGen ran out, which I got when Game Buyers (formerly Ultra Game Players, and formerly Game Players) went kaput.

Outside of video game mags, I read Mad Magazine and recently started reading this new manga anthology called Yen Plus. I also read Otaku USA, but I haven't subscribed yet and I've missed the last one or two issues, and I've only been reading it since the April '08 issue (it's released every other month, totally 6 issues). The reason for that is cuz it's only sold down in Buxton, which is about 10 miles south of Avon.

I'm also trying to get into Heavy Metal Magazine. I have two issues, each from a different series. You see, for those who don't know, they have two different versions: a bi-monthly version and a special version released only thrice a year.

I also wanna get Fangoria, but I have yet to see it in stores anywhere, and that's counting on my vacation to Orlando (which means virtually no luck in South Carolina, Georgia OR Florida). And the subscription fees are a real bitch!
