Trust me I have and could probably recite it. Carlin has always been solutions oriented, but to say a part of his ongoing act doesn't include being bitter is folly. Even when he uses his "Quiet voice" his frustration is palpable.MrPopo wrote:Listen to Carlin's early work. I don't even know the person. I just think that someone who cares if an entertainer has a wild sex life (which does not include breaking laws), is probably one of those people who would rather vote for a politician because he takes his son to football games rather than one who is going to save the country.Johnodog wrote: I understand that you are a fan of Letterman. Good for you. I once was myself.
Which reminds me of this chain email:
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts. Here are the facts about the three leading candidates.
Candidate A - Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two Mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.
Candidate B - He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.
Candidate C - He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and never cheated on his wife.
Which of these candidates would be your choice? Decide first, no peeking, then scroll down for the answer.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Candidate B is Winston Churchill.
Candidate C is Adolph Hitler.

B by far.
Whoa, whoa wait. Hitler was a vegetarian? I smell the smell of bogus.

yeah it's bogus (I said it's a chain email, but I guess I should have made it more clear), but it is true that Hitler was your "ideal" leader and that Churchill was someone who's real self was unelectable for the masses. But that's the beauty of desperate times. It allows great men to shine.Luke wrote:B by far.

I have to agree with MrPopo. Carlin changed a lot in his later years. His acts were less fun and more angry. You want to talk about a guy who was ALWAYS bitter and angry, listen to all of Bill Hicks' material. For the record though, I enjoyed Carlin more in his jaded, cynical years. I love his whole bit on suicide. When I'm having a bad day and pissed at the world, I put on some Bill Hicks or later years CarlinLuke wrote:Trust me I have and could probably recite it. Just watched that Letterman confession and must say he handled the situation very well. Sure, the guy made mistakes. But that doesn't make him a bad man per se. The only one to judge him for these actions is his wife...
As for Bill Hicks. The guy was a genius and left us far too soon...

Another comic who I can recite almost all of his material.
Carlin was always, again, always sarcastic and bitter. There is no denying that. He's always wanted to make people think, but to suggest that at any performance he was mostly cheerful is just wrong. It's like saying Dennis Leary has always been positive.

Actually, I just think of Dennis Leary as a guy who stole all of Bill Hicks' material
