a series not so popular, but you seem to love it.

They get made fun of all the time, and they are admittedly difficult to take seriously, but I love Phantasmagoria 1 & 2. :D

Yes, I am actually looking at that "average" game and not something that is highly praised by many. I guess you can say I'm referring to the "filler" games. One good example is the Way of the Samurai series, which is a game that doesn't really take itself too seriously and not many people know about it. It also got average to decent reviews, so it was easily ignored by gamers. Wild Arms is a pretty good example for rpgs. It isn't really about having "low standards" for average games, but it's more about foreseeing a potential or charm behind the games.

if it is a series and not a single game, it likely already has a reasonable/profitable degree of popularity

I love The 7th Saga trilogy (only one game made it to North America). Most people who have played the first game seem to hate it with a passion.

I love Bomberman Hero for N64.

Series wise. . . um. . . I agree with above. If it became a series it's probably decently popular.

yeah I mean, Oneechanbara and Earth Defense Force have multiple entries, but I wouldn't call either "popular."

The King's Field series. I'm so in love in with it.

I seem to like the oddball entries in game series, too. Like Castlevania II, Sonic 3D Blast, Super Mario Bros. 2, Zelda II, and Mega Man Legends.

Dynasty Warriors. I was into that series for a while. It gets critically maligned in the west, though popular in the east. I loved the Sly Cooper series back during the PS2 era, even though Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank got all the attention and were always more successful. I loved the Tecmo Deception series, don't think they ever really caught on though. I was a fan of MDK and MDK 2. People rarely talk about those games. The Tenchu series has enjoyed some popularity, but never rose about being sort of cult hit series ever in the shadow of major hit stealth games like Spliner Cell, Metal Gear Solid, Hitman, etc. but I've always loved them and feel that they have been reborn in 2D with Mark of the Ninja. I'm also a big fan of the Dishwasher Samurai games which have been largely overshadowed by the likes of Castle Crashers, Scott Pilgrim and the Shank games. I've always enjoyed Buffy the Vampire Slayer and BtVS Chaos Bleeds on the Xbox, though Chaos Bleeds wasn't nearly as good as the first game. I've sort of picked Lollipop Chainsaw as the closest thing I can get to a new Buffy game. It got some mixed reviews but I enjoyed it a lot

I love the Tenchu games. That grappling hook is one of the coolest game mechanics I've seen from games of that era. It's so much fun grappling around rooftops and trees then dropping down onto your kill.
